PART 1 - Dialogue

你在广播里将听到一所房子失火的情况。说话的有房主、消防队长、在一旁观看的人和当地电台记者,下面是记者和消防队长的一段对话。
REPORTER:
Was there anyone inside?
FIREMAN:
No... no one.
REPORTER:
And have you got the fire under control?
FIREMAN:
Yes,we have.
REPORTER:
Well,did you have any difficulties?
FIREMAN:
Not really...
REPORTER:
What about that paint shed?
Were you worried about it?
FIREMAN:
Yes...a little ... but it's O.K. now.

PART 2 - Vocabulary

a fire 一场火灾
a fire brigade 消防队
flammable material 易燃物品
(有人喜欢说inflammable material,意思相同.)
the occupier of the house 住在房子里的人
(可能是房子的主人,也可能是房客.)
an owner 所有者,主人
paint 油漆
turps 松节油 (是turpentine的简称)
inside 里面
certain 肯定
dangerous 危险
happen 发生
Have you got the fire under control?
火势控制住了吗?
He's around here somewhere 他就在附近
No,that's not really true 不,不完全对
Not really 不完全是这样
What's happened? 发生了什么事?
What I mean is.. 我的意思是...

PART 3 - The Lesson

ASKING FOR AND GIVING INFORMATION 了解情况与提供情况

1. ASKING FOR INFORMATION 了解情况
用特殊疑问句:
What's happened?
Where's the fire?
When did it start?
Whose house is it?
Who lives here?
用一般疑问句
Did you see the fire?
Has the fire brigade arrived yet?
Was there anyone inside?
(要了解情况,也不限于使用这两种问句,但这两种问句用得最多.)

2. GIVING INFORMATION 提供情况
现在看一看上面有些问题可以怎样回答.
What's happened?
There's a fire.

Where's the fire?
Over there!

When did it start?
Five minutes ago.

Whose house is it?
I don't know.

Who lives here?
That man - over there.

3. WAYS TO CHECK,CLARIFY AND CORRECT INFORMATION
核实情况,进一步说明情况,纠正错误说法
a) Checking Information 核实情况
What do you mean?
Are you sure/certain?
用反意疑问句,例如:
He's the owner,isn't he? (反意疑问句还有其他用途)
b) Clarifying Information 进一步说明情况
I mean...
What I mean is...
c) Correcting Information
No,that's not really ture.

CONVERSATIONAL DEVICES

What I mean is.../I mean...
这两个说法常在会话中用来表示要作进一步说明.例如:
a) BARBARA:
I don't like black. What I mean is, it isn't my favourite colour.
b) JOHN:
I'm not hungry. I mean I don't feel like eating.

PRONUNCIATION CORNER

在广播里可以听到英语问句使用的两个主要语调:
1. 特殊疑问句,末尾通常用降调:
Who came?
When did it happen?
2. 一般疑问句,末尾通常用升调:
Do you know?
Is she coming?
Has he finished?

请看下面的十个句子,并辨别说话的人是在了解情况(asking)、提供情况(giving)核实情况(checking)、 进一步说明清况(clarifying),还是在纠正错误说法(correcting)。必要时可以参看本讲第3部分。请将答案写在短旬后面的括号里。
