The problem of distracted drivers. We are not talking about eating a burger or making a cell phone call when behind the wheel. Police say it’s hard to believe what people will do while driving. And the question is, should some of these things be criminal? Here’s Barbara Pinto.

At this suburban Chicago intersection, Anita Zefuki lost her life, hit from behind on her motorcycle by a driver, police say, was distracted.

Man: She had been painting her nails while driving her vehicle. She conceded to us that she was not paying attention.

Prosecutors have yet to file criminal charges. Distracted drivers cause more than 1/3 of all auto accidents, and it’s not just talking or texting as you can see on YouTube.

Woman: Can you believe this man is reading a novel?

But the law has yet to catch up with technology. Five states ban all cell phone use while driving, another 11 ticket for texting. But few make provisions for drivers who are fixing their makeup or eating.

Man: They are both very high-risk activities. Drunk driving is now illegal, and distracted driving needs to be illegal as well.
