Since the modern Olympics were revived in 1896, the Olympic Games have grown into a more dazzling exhibition with each successive occurrence. From the Greek victory in the first Olympic marathon to Hicham El Guerrouj's double-victory in 2004, athletes in distance events have gained success in a variety of ways. For the shot put, discus, javelin, long distance running and high jump, athletes have gained glory through combinations of speed, strength and endurance.
