We have simulated human Mars exploration stations in the Canadian High Arctic and the American desert, where we can actually practice Mars missions and see what might work and what won't. The Mars Society has now run about 17 different crews between the Arctic and the desert stations.

Through NASA's educational activities, we've been working with the Mars Society to encourage this sort of astronaut training.
These trips give its participants a taste of what awaits them on Mars.
I'm gonna be in this position here. I'm gonna be the geologist. I'll be scouting for samples...
One of the most important things we do here is our EVAs—our extravehicular activities. When we go for an EVA, we have to put our spacesuits, depressurize an airlock for one minute and then go out and conduct a EVA. Airlock is important because we need to depressurize down to the pressure of the Martian atmosphere, so when we open the hatch, it doesn't, it's supposedly decompressed.
We'll go 70 meters for a next location...
Roger that.

The job on Mars, the work that they are there to do is outside, and that work has be done in spacesuits.
But what will the Martian spacesuits of the future look like? At MIT they are reinventing the spacesuit from scratch.
The human mission tomorrow is really gonna push the limits of what we can do. We really want to think of a revolutionary design and technologies that could allow us to provide a new suit for Mars exploration.
Dava Newman is a professor at MIT, her specialty is human space flight.
One of the really important challenges is how do we keep a people alive. How do we keep astronauts alive. The current spacesuit is great, but it does have a few limitations, namely, it's really heavy. The massive, the current system is about 140 kilos that's pushing 300 pounds. It's wonderful if you are weighed in this environment, but of course, we need a new system for Mars.
