This year marks the 100th anniversary of Indian filmmaking, and the 44th International Film Festival of India is celebrating that legacy in the city of Goa. Talents from around the world are there to compete for the prestigious Golden Peacock award.

The 10-day-festival kicked off on Thursday, highlighted by the Indian Panorama Section. 42 Indian films will be screened in the coming days to commemorate a century of film achievement.

Now, young generation directors, screenwriters and actors are striving to tell characteristically Indian stories. Thousands of films premiere in India each year, with an audience of fourteen million viewers and a box office of 2.2 billion US dollars. The film industry currently accounts for 13 percent of India’s GDP.
