Living in Beijing, I thought that the city during the day was just fascinating.

The sheer number of people walking on the sidewalks,

barely impenetrable subway stations,

overly packed buses and endless lines of cars moving around the city.

As expected from Beijing,

it was a bustling city where time was worth a lot of quai (RMB).

Beijingat night though was probably the most interesting.

Friends wanting to show me around the city

would drag me from historic monuments to museums to famous streets

and of course completing the day with a visit to a restaurant

guaranteed to lead to a bar and then a club.

Two areas in Beijing are famous for the number of clubs that one can go to.

Both had distinct features separating them from each other

but one thing that they had in common was the back of the club.

I am not pointing out at the sketchy back of the club but the back where most ex-pats tend to prefer. (First time cut)

Located away from the entrance and a little secluded from the rest of the club,

in the back of the club English and not Chinese prevails.

In terms of race, there is not a specific one

and individuals from all continents are represented.

There were sons and daughters of ambassadors, businessmen, delegates,

or the children of the middle to the bourgeois class ofChinathat had the opportunity to live/study abroad.

Native English speakers and Chinese speakers are actually at a disadvantage on these grounds.

Perspectives, let’s take someone from theUnited States.

Living inChinathey probably have learned some form of Chinese.

Many tend to be fully conversational however tend to lack reading & writing skills.

Being enrolled at an American, British or IB School

the main language that they communicate in we can assume is English.

Taking someone that was born and raised in Beijing,

the same conditions apply and that person speaks both English and Chinese fluently.

Branching out a little bit more, let’s take someone fromFrance.

There is indeed a French school in Beijing, (Lycée Francais International de Pékin)

but as we know it, in business if one does not speak English

then it will be hard for that person to do any sort of business in the future.

Thus, we can even assume that the parents of the students are also fluent in English.

In summary, someone fromFrancewould be able to communicate in three different languages.

Branching out even more, let’s say we have an international couple living inChinafor work.

You have the native language of the mother, the father, English and then Chinese.

In total that makes four languages.

Simply knowing more languages or as matter of fact English

is not enough to enter this so-called elite circle.

With the heavy influence of theUnited StatesonChina,

songs played at clubs lean heavily on songs that were made in theUnited States.

American television is likewise extremely popular inChinaand in the world.

Consequently, American style jokes, puns, fashions and allusions to South Park or Family Guy

have a near 100 percent chance of perfectly hitting the level of etiquette or common sense that is a now a standard in the back of these clubs.

This is where a slight divide starts to take place.

It is less apparent amongst foreigners from westernized countries

but stands out a bit more amongst people who are Chinese.

Having been raised in well to do families,

many Chinese students in the back of the club have been taking English classes since they were young.

They speak at a native level and better yet sometimes with a slight British accent.

The issue is still the same though,

when put in this Expatriate environment the rules are different,

the mindset is different and these differences reach all the way down to the menu.

Being able to read the name B-52 does not mean that one will know how to drink it.

When done correctly, the person that passed the order will receive a lighter

that he or she will use to lit the shot on fire and then a straw to quickly drink the contents of the shot.

If done incorrectly, you guys can already imagine the problems that could potentially take place.

This is the reality of the back of the club that I saw in Beijing.

In this day of age, knowing two languages is no longer as rare as before.

To some extent, knowing a language very well is not as helpful as

learning a little bit of a language but a lot more about the culture

that is behind that language.

In this continuously globalized world a new standard is quickly being formed

and I think that during my time in Beijing

I’ve had a glance at what that sight will be.

With this said, I want to hear you guys' opinion.

Have you experienced this "Back of the Club" phenomenon in the places that you have been?
