Soul of Seattle Legendary Musician andProducer Quincy Jones Tours His City

QUINCY JONES, MUSICIAN AND PRODUCER

What's unique about Seattle: everything'sso alive. This is the big city. If Seattle were a person, it would bePicasso-that melting pot of joy and mystery and intrigue and challenge andbeauty.

Hi, I'm Quincy Jones, and I'm gonna showyou my Seattle. I see beautiful mother Mount Rainier lying peacefully with herarms embracing all of the Seattle Harbor. You come back every decade and thereare more and more buildings, and noticeably Frank Gehry built the EMP Museumfor Paul Allen over there, which really stands out, and the tower.

Frank Gehry told me his goal has alwaysbeen to make his buildings look like a fish with the head and the tail choppedoff. That's just what it looks like. He says that if architecture is frozenmusic, music must be liquid architecture.

Nature is embracing all of it; that's whatI've always loved--that nature around everything. Very, very beautiful.

This is Pike Place Fish Market. This iswhere all the melting pot of Seattle's about-all the diversity in this city, ofevery walk of life, every occupation. And this is the... I don't think youcould get your roots together if this city wasn't like this. It's [an] amazing, amazing culture in Seattle. Well, Seattle's personality was probably one of thewildest cities' in America during the mid-'40s. It was on fire, absolutely onfire. It's a good city now, but not even one tenth of what it was during then. It's amazing, 'cause I had just left Chicago when I was 10. We'd been there 10years in the biggest black ghetto in America during the Depression.

I think Ivar's is a monument to Seattle, about, I guess, you know, entrepreneurship, really. You know, they became aclassic monumental of franchise. I was only nine years old when I first went toan Ivar's, and it was the place. You know, and it didn't have just clams then,it had fish and chips and all that stuff, you know, 'cause I wasn't into clamsthen, but I could... it took me a while to get to clams.

Love, relationships, friendships, and soforth, again it goes back to Garfield High School. I lived around the corner, half a block here, and you know this is my foundation, you know. As a kid, education is what provides you with a foundation. Garfield just makes my heart, soul smile. The diversity here in the '40s was awesome, but you don't thinkabout it, because it's part . . . you think that's the way life is. But this ismy baby, and I'm so proud of it.

This is the Eagles Auditorium.

Wow! Woo! I can't believe it. Just like itwas.

And we played here like about 1948 withBumps Blackwell's Junior Band with Billie Holiday.

What's unique about Seattle is hard to putyour finger on because it has changing faces. This is the big city, and this iswhere all the clubs were, the jazz. Just everything was so alive. I don't knowhow we got here, but I'm sure glad we got here, because it was a major, major, major influence on my life.
