For Chinese customers, sipping a latte from a Starbucks cup is more than a way to stay caffeinated – it’s a trendy cultural status symbol. But it could also come with safety risks. Starbucks Corp. announced this week that it will recall more than 54,000 rigid stainless steel straws from the Chinese market after several people cut their mouths on the straws in the United States and Canada.

The current Chinese recall, which began on August 3, targets straws produced between September 2013 and March 2016.

The eco-friendly straws took off both in China and overseas, with over 2.5 million units sold in the U.S. Customers usually purchased reusable Starbucks cups to go with the straws.
此类环保吸管一度在中国和海外盛行开来,美国已售出2500万吸管。顾客通常会购买可再使用杯子,吸管是配套产品。
Starbucks is also recalling the straws from Canadian and American stores after four reports of children cutting the insides of their mouths while using the straws.
星巴克也同时召回了销往加拿大和美国的吸管,此前有报道称四名儿童在使用时划伤了嘴。

In a statement on its website, Starbucks’ Chinese arm called the recall a “precautionary move,” saying that “customers, especially children, may be accidentally injured if they fall on the straw while using it.”

Customers can bring their metal straws to one of China’s over 2,000 Starbucks stores and exchange them for free acrylic straws. The steel model has been taken off the shelves of Chinese stores, but third parties are still selling the metal straws, or knockoff imitations, on the popular e-commerce site Taobao.
顾客可将吸管退还给中国2000多家门店,并换取免费的丙烯酸吸管。不锈钢吸管现已在中国下架,但第三方仍在销售,电商淘宝的山寨品也同样如此。
Starbucks straws aren’t the first high-profile recall in Chinese markets this summer. Swedish furniture maker Ikea bowed to pressure from both regulators and angry Internet users and recalled a dresser line from Chinese stores in July. The dressers were blamed for the deaths of several toddlers in the U.S. A flurry of online comments from Chinese Netizens criticized Ikea for initially limiting the recall to North America, accusing them of discriminating against Chinese customers and calling for stronger consumer safety standards.
今年夏天,星巴克吸管不是第一家在中国施行高调召回的企业。此前受监管人员和网友压力,瑞典家居制造商宜家于7月召回问题抽屉柜。在美国,问题柜已造成多名幼儿死亡。网友批评如潮,指责宜家仅将召回范围限制在北美,称宜家歧视中国消费者,并要求设立严格的消费者安全标准。
While the Ikea recall wasn’t extended to China for nearly two weeks, Starbucks announced that they were recalling the straws in Chinese stores just a day after launching its recall in the U.S. A commenter on the Twitter-like messaging site Weibo compared the two recalls favorably, praising Starbucks’ “attitude” as “better than Ikeas.”
近两周以来,宜家仍未将召回范围扩展到中国,而就在星巴克宣布在美国召回一天后,中国市场也开始施行召回。有网友在微博中将两家企业进行了对比,称赞星巴克的“态度”比宜家好。
