Walmart’s first-quarter results were surprisingly good, rewarding the world’s largest retailer for its efforts to modernize stores and raise efficiency. Sales in its American stores were up 1%, the seventh successive quarterly rise. Profits rose too. The company said the next quarter would also be strong. Other big American retailers have recently reported less encouraging results.
