Drug Addiction in Iran Has Doubled

According to a recent survey by Iran’s Drug Control Organization, drug addiction in Iran has doubled in the past six years. Approximately 2.8 million people in Iran are regular drug users. Their drug of choice is opium. Opium is the main ingredient found in heroin and is extracted from poppy resin. It accounts for close to 70% of the drugs consumed in Iran, where it is traditionally smoked in pipes. About 90% of the world’s opium comes from Afghanistan, and Iran is the main gateway for traffickers.
