Massive Iceberg Breaks Off Antarctic Ice Shelf
A NASA satellite has confirmed that a massive iceberg the size of Jamaica has broken off from a floating Antarctic ice shelf known as Larsen C. Researchers had been predicting this split since last November when a large rift was discovered. Scientists describe this process as “calfing” and are not yet blaming it on man-made global warming. They do, however, believe the breaking off of this iceberg has resulted in a significant change to the earth’s geography. The iceberg, one of the world’s largest, could pose a major problem to the shipping industry in the future as it breaks up.
