Banned Drinker Register Commences in Australia’s Northern Territory
A new ban went into effect in Australia’s Northern Territory on September 1, preventing residents with drinking problems from buying alcohol. To purchase alcohol at a store in the Northern Territory, one must now present a valid photo ID. The ID will be scanned to confirm that the purchaser is not on the Banned Drinker Register. The Banned Drinker Register started with 1,000 names but is expected to grow rapidly. The register includes people who have been charged with drinking and driving or with domestic abuse related to alcoholism. Doctors, nurses, and child protection workers can also identify people who should be on the list.
