Saudi Women Granted Right to Drive
A royal decree has been issued in Saudi Arabia that gives women the right to drive. Until now, women in the kingdom have not been allowed to obtain a driver’s licence or drive a car. Saudi Arabia is the only country that has this ban. For years, human rights groups have rallied for women in the kingdom to have this basic right. Lifting the ban will allow many more women to go to work and will help save costs on hiring drivers. As female Saudi activist Manal Al-Sarif said, the decision was largely economic: “They cannot afford keeping women in the back seat.” The royal order will go into effect in June 2018.
