Walking through the city of Havana,
穿行在哈瓦那这座城市
one day I look up, and one of the oldest neon signs was off.
有一天，我抬起头，看到最大的一个霓虹灯被拆了下来
I realized I should just do something with it.
我意识到我必须得做点什么了
I do see the future of the beauty of the city related with the past,
我真心觉得，这座城市的美，跟过去有关
and that past was the neon.
而那种过去就是霓虹灯
Cuban artist Kadir López Nieves is bringing new light and life to the streets of Havana
古巴艺术家Kadir López Nieves正重新点亮哈瓦那的街道，给这座城市赋予新的生机
by restoring the city's neon signs one-by-one with his project, Havana Light.
通过将这座城市的霓虹灯一个个重新安装回去，这一项目被他称之为“哈瓦那之光”
Many of these signs have sat abandoned for decades.
这些标志很多都已经被弃置几十年了
In the '50s and '40s, there was the renaissance of the neon in Cuba,
上个世纪四五十年代，古巴出现了一股霓虹灯的风潮
thousands of neon all over the city of Havana.
哈瓦那这座城市挂满了成千上万个霓虹灯
The neon was part of the architecture.
这些霓虹灯是这些建筑的一部分
But in the 1960s, the neon signs became difficult and expensive to maintain,
然而到了六十年代，维持这些霓虹灯需要的费用和难度都增加了
and slowly they were taken down or shut off and left to decay.
慢慢地，它们就被拆下来，任由它们变烂
Today, the neon is considered like a piece of art in itself.
现在，这些霓虹灯几乎已经成了艺术品
The mission is taking the art outside.

People walking in the street,

they don't have to be into the museum to look into a piece of art.

Over the past three years, Kadir and his team have restored dozens of signs across the city.
过去三年里，Kadir和他的团队已经修复了这座城市里的好几十个霓虹灯
It can be a painstaking process.
修复的过程会很痛苦
It's no different than fixing an old car.
跟修一台旧车没什么区别
You take all the elements out and you start fixing everything that is rusted or damaged.
都是把零件拆下来，每个生锈或是受损的部位都要修复
The most difficult thing is the bending.
最棘手的是弯曲工艺
It's a skill that very few people have in the world.
全世界都没几个人会这门手艺
So, the most complicated process is taking it down and lifting it up,
而最复杂的环节是把它拆下来再弄上去
'cause you need a lot of men.
因为需要很多人手
Certain places like Old Havana,
有些地方，比如哈瓦那老城那种地方
you gotta do it by rope, by hand,
就需要用绳子或是徒手搬，
because big cars and cranes, they cannot get in there.
因为大车或是起重机进不去
It is phenomenal to see the people's reaction.
看到人们的反应会很震撼
In some cases, we see kind of tears in their eyes.
有时候我们能看到他们眼里的泪光
They get so excited about seeing something that was about to disappear coming back to life.
看到即将消失的东西重新回到他们的生活中，他们实在是太激动了
Neon ...it means a restoration ...of hope.
霓虹灯……代表的是修复……希望
You make people's lives happier.
