A day after Congress voted on a measure to reopen the government which did not include DACA,

activists and DACA recipients gathered outside the Capitol between meetings with their Senators and Representatives to demand protections.
Some of them, last week, just last week, made a lot of promises about standing with Dreamers
and that they were not gonna back down and then on Monday, we got this heartbreaking vote.
Many DACA recipients, some of whom have been lobbying lawmakers and protesting for months are now less optimistic.

I want to be optimistic. I want to believe the promises, but I've been up here a couple of times now, with different organizations from different angles,

actually making appointments with Congressmen and meeting with them and telling them our stories and we keep on hearing the same thing.
We're gonna work on it. We're gonna work on it and we haven't seen that work.
Romero came to the United States when she was five.
Like many Dreamers, she wants lawmakers to pass a clean Dream Act which would allow DACA recipients to stay permanently in the country.
It's a matter of urgency, they say, because many are losing their status.
It's a very heartbreaking time and we are in very kind of like a time of emergency
and that's why we are acting so hard and why we're pushing our leaders so hard to pass something because the more we wait, the more people get deported.
Congress now has until February 8th to agree on a long-term spending bill, which many lawmakers have promised will include protections for Dreamers.
