I read a science story the other day and it said,

I see where you are going with this. The writer used the present perfect tense!

Right! Why would the writer use the present perfect tense?

English speakers use the present perfect tense to talk about actions or states that happened in the past.

These actions or states continue into the present, or they are still important in the present.

You will often see verbs of discovery used in the present perfect tense, particularly in academic writing.

Writers use these verbs to tell about past research or studies.
