A common use of the Comma is to show a pause: a brief suspension of speech.
逗号的常用用法是表示停顿：说话中的短暂暂停。
This usage is important in poetry, speechwriting, and creative writing.
这种用法在诗歌、演讲稿和创造性写作中都很重要。
Another way the Comma works is to separate clauses.
逗号的另一种用法是分离从句。
It shows what is different and what belongs together in a sentence.
它说明句子中什么是不同的，以及哪些东西归到一起。
For example, Today on Everyday Grammar, we will explore common uses of the comma.
例如，在今天的《每日语法》中，我们将探讨逗号的常用用法。
If we remove the words before the comma,
如果我们去掉逗号前面的词，
the independent Clause "we will explore common uses of the comma." could become its own sentence.

But even with stylistic guides,

the placement of a comma could come down to the personal choice of the writer, right?

Yes! That's true. That's why there are two good tips for using commas:

First, put yourself in the reader's position.

Will your comma be understood by the reader in the same way you mean it?

And second, make short, declarative sentences.

If your sentence has too many commas, it might confuse the reader.
