Canadian Teen Beats Tennis Legend to Win US Open

On September 7, 19-year-old Bianca Andreescu became the first Canadian tennis player to win a Grand Slam singles title. Andreescu beat tennis legend Serena Williams in two straight sets to win the US Open title. Before this season, Andreescu was practically an unknown. She did not even qualify for last year’s US Open. Three years ago, the young tennis player wrote a pretend cheque to herself for winning the US Open. On Sunday, she received her real prize money of over five million Canadian dollars. Andreescu’s win is being celebrated as one of Canada’s most historic sporting wins.
