In the booming fields of science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM fields,

women only occupy around 20 percent of these careers.

So, hey, a room for improvement, right?

The European Commission decided, you know what, we should do something about this.

We need something to help young girls understand that science is for women too.
得搞点事情，让女孩子们知道，科学也是女性的发展道路之一。
And that's how this little gem was born.
于是，这颗“小宝石”就诞生啦。
"Science. Science: it's a girl thing! It's a girl thing!"
科学。科学：女生的菜！女生的菜！
Well, you tried.
嗯……至少你们已经努力过了。
As pure as the intentions, well, the Commission kind of failed on this one.
尽管委员会是怀着无比单纯的动机做的这个广告，只是，结果稍稍有那么一点失败。
And the attempt to market science women were seen a parade of exaggerated stereotypes about what girls like and who they are,
委员会原本是想推广从事科学研究的女性，结果，观众只看到了刻画女孩儿喜欢什么，她们是怎样的人的一系列被夸大了的刻板印象，
a distracted male scientists make-up,
只看到了科学领域男性所占比例大到让人张皇失措这一问题，
an overall message that to me is entirely disconnected from the mission of getting young women into science.
在我看来，这个广告整体传达的信息完全跟让年轻女性投身科学这一目标脱节了。
Instead of connecting them with practical application, wonder, awe, inspiration,
因为它没有将女性同实际操作，同奇迹，同敬畏、灵感联系在一起，
it connects them with fashion and makeup,
而是将她们与时尚和化妆
stuff women are already connected with everyday, until our eyeballs bleed.
这些女性同胞们每天都在接触，除非我们的眼睛已经暴血了的东西联系在了一起。
This video inspired such an outrage that it had to be removed.
这段视频激起了众怒，最后没办法，只能删掉。
The Internet and the scientific community, particularly female scientists, were very put off by the way their work was characterized,
互联网和科学界，尤其是女性科学家，对视频用那样的方式刻画她们的工作感到非常反感，
which means lots of parodies for us, like this one that came out this week.
这就意味着我们能看到许多有关的恶搞视频，比如这周才出来的这个视频。
All this hubbub does beg at a deeper question though:

Why aren't women in the sciences? And how do we get them there?

A number of studies have looked at the gender disparities and the findings are impressively awful.

For instance, research coming out of Yale found that both male and female science professors
比如，耶鲁大学的研究就发现，无论是男性科学教授还是女性科学教授
widely regarded female undergrads less competent than males with the same exact accomplishments and skills.

As such, they were less likely to offer women mentoring or a job and when they did, they were paid less.
他们带女学生或是招女学生的可能性也更小，而且，即便是招了女学生，给的薪酬也会比男生少。
Over and over again, the research says unconscious stereotypes about women
一次又一次的研究都表明，针对女性的下意识的刻板印象
bleeds into small slights that add up to big exclusion all throughout their lives,
往往都发轫于很小很小的细节，但累计起来就促成了女性在生活的方方面面都被排斥这一现状，
which is why that "it's a girl thing" video is so painfully ironic.
这也是为什么“（科学是）女生的菜”这段视频极具讽刺意味的原因。
So, what can we do?
那么，我们能做点儿什么呢？
For starters, professors and parents need to be informed about stereotype threat
首先，教授和家长需要知道，存在陷入刻板印象的可能性，
and the pitfalls that it presents for women's performance and opportunities.
以及刻板印象对女性的表现和机会造成的隐患。
We need to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements that women are making in the sciences.
我们需要承认并庆祝女性在科学领域取得的成就。
We need to give girls role models in this field,
我们需要在这个领域给女孩们树立榜样，
I mean, we've got Bill Nye, Carl Sagan, Neil Tyson, Darwin, Galileo, but where's Mae Jemison or Shirley Jackson?
我们都知道比尔·奈，卡尔·萨根，尼尔·泰森，达尔文，伽利略，但是梅·杰米森和雪莉·杰克逊呢？
why doesn't anybody know who Rosalind Franklin, Mary Anning or Carolyn Herschel was?
为什么没有人知道罗莎琳·富兰克林，玛丽·安宁或者卡罗琳·赫歇尔是谁？
We also need to create college environments and a culture
此外，我们还需要在大学和社会中营造
that supports women in science and engineering in the same exact ways that men are supported.
一种支持女性从事科学和工程事业丝毫不必支持男性逊色的氛围。
Because science people, science isn't a boy thing or a girl thing, it's an everybody thing, let's make it happen, all right?
因为搞科学的人，或者说科学，并不单是男生的菜或女生的菜，它是所有人的菜，就让我们来实现这一点，好吗？
