Alright, so, let's start by looking at some typical questions and answers related to home, family and work, alright?

好的,我们先来看看几个比较有代表性的,有关住所、家人和工作的问题和回答。

Let's go.

一个一个看。

So a weaker answer would be...when asked where do you live?

比较不好的回答,被问到“你现在住哪儿?”的时候,比较不好的回答会是什么样呢?

A weaker answer would be "I live in house".

比较不好的回答是“我住在房子里”。

What's wrong with that?

这样回答有什么问题呢?

You tell me.

大家说说看。

It should be incorrect english with correct grammar.

语法并没有什么不妥,但这么回答还是不对。

I live in a..a house, right?

应该是“我住在一套,一套房子里”,对吧?

So you need that article here.

这里需要有冠词。

Whenever we're talking about one thing in english, we need to say 'a' or 'a', alright?

无论什么时候谈论到一个东西,我们都需要加上“a”或“a”,对吧。

Now, suppose you're asked to describe the house a little bit.

接下来,假设考官让你简单描述一下你住的房子。

And you say 'It's three bedrooms apartment'.

你回答说,“It's three bedrooms apartment”(那是三居的房子)。

So that's a mistake.

这就又错了。

We cannot say 'It's three bedrooms apartment.'

我们不能说“It's three bedrooms apartment”。

We would need to say 'It's a...It's a three bedroom apartment'.

我们需要说“It's a...”要说“It's a three bedroom apartment”。

Why?

为什么?

You're saying to me that doesn't make sense.

你肯定会反驳说,这说不通啊。

They're three, it's more than one, it's plural. Right.

有三个卧室,那就多于一个,那应该是复数啊。这么说也没错。

So, if you said, 'My apartment has three bedrooms', Okay?

如果你说的是“My apartment has three bedrooms”(我住的房子有三个卧室),听清楚了吗?

Then, it's enough to say, 'three bedrooms' period. Like end. Right?

那你说“three bedrooms”是完全没问题的,好吗,而且就得这么说。

But here, 'three bedroom' became like an adjective for the word 'apartment'.

但这句话里,“three bedroom”相当于是修饰“apartment”的一个形容词。

And in that case you need to drop the 's'.

所以我们需要把“s”拿掉。

Now, it's very good for you to actually use this kind of expression if you have a chance, if there's the right kind of question.

现在,如果有机会,而且应用场景合适的话,这么说是比较讨巧的。

Don't just put it somewhere if it's not doesn't make sense.

但请不要随便乱用,把它用到不该用的地方。

But if they're asked about your apartment, you can say 'I live in a two-bedroom apartment'.

但如果考官问到了有关住所的问题,那你就可以说“I live in a two-bedroom apartment”(我住的是一套两居室)。

'I live in a three-bedroom house'.

或者“I live in a three-bedroom house”(我住的是一套三居室)。

And that little difference with no 's' and with an 's' and no 's' actually shows that you speak a much more advanced level english, okay?

有“s”和没有“s”的这一丁点儿区别就能显示出你说的英语的水平好吧。

These little mistakes, these little corrections can make all the difference.

这些小小的错误,或是小小的变通效果可以说是天差地别。

That's what I'm pointing out to you here.

我要讲的就是这个。

Okay, let's go on.

好的,我们继续。

Suppose you're asked to talk about the advantages and disadvantages of living somewhere.

假设现在考官要你说说住在某个地方的优缺点。

So you start to explain.

你开始展开了。

Now, there is a difference in good english between the word 'the' and 'the', okay?

这个时候要想拿高分还要懂得“the”和“the”的区别。

Same word, spelled the same, but sometimes we say 'the' and sometimes we say 'the',

它们是同一个单词,拼写也是一样的,但有时候我们会说成“the”,有时候则会说成“the”,

But how do you know?

但你怎么知道什么时候用哪个呢?

It's very easy.

很简单。

You look at the word that comes after that.

看它后面跟的单词。

If the word that comes after 'the' or 'the' starts with a vowel, then we usually say 'the', like 'thee', okay?

如果跟在后面的单词是以元音开头的,那我们一般会说“the”,发音跟“thee”一样,记住了吗?

"The advantages", "the advantages of living in an apartment are..."

所以要说“The advantages”(的优点),“the advantages of living in an apartment are...”(住那套公寓的优点是……)

Or 'The disadvantages of living in an apartment are...'

或者“The disadvantages of living in an apartment are...”(住那套公寓的缺点是……)

Okay?

听明白了吗?

The advantages, the disadvantages.

The advantages, the disadvantages.

Because 'advantages' starts with a vowel.

因为“advantages”这个词是以元音开头的。

So try to remember that.

大家记好了啊。

These little sophisticated changes show that you are more comfortable (with) english.

这些小的复杂的变化能够表明你说英语能说得比较自在。

You're more familiar with english, you're more fluent in english.

你对英语比较熟。你能说得比较流利。

And you deserve higher marks in english, okay.

监考老师值得给你更高的分数,好吧。

Alright. Now, you might be asked, you know, do you enjoy living in an apartment?

好的。现在,考官可能会问你,你喜欢住公寓吗?

So a weaker answer, and actually in this case not just weaker but incorrect, would be to say 'I enjoy to live in an apartment because whatever'.

这个时候,比较不好的回答,不仅不好,还有错的回答是“I enjoy to live in an apartment because whatever”(我喜欢住公寓,因为怎样怎样)。

But what's wrong with saying 'I enjoy to live'?

但说“I enjoy to live”有什么问题呢?

We can't say incorrect english 'I enjoy to live...'

我们不能说“I enjoy to live”,因为这是不正确的。

Some verbs in english are followed by an infinitive, like to live...

英语中有一些动词后面要跟不定式,比如“like”后面就要跟“to live……”

And others are followed by a gerund, like 'living', the verb with 'ing',

但其他动词后面要跟动名词,跟“living”,跟ing形式的“live”,

And 'enjoy' is one of those very common words which are quite likely to need to use in your ielts exam,

“enjoy”就是比较常见的一个例子,而且你在雅思考试中用到这个词的几率也很大,

which needs to be followed by a gerund and not by this infinitive.

它后面就要跟动名词,不能跟不定式。

So 'I enjoy living', 'I enjoy reading', 'I enjoy watching movies', not 'I enjoy to watch, that's actually incorrect.

所以你要说“I enjoy living”(我喜欢生活在……),“I enjoy reading”(我喜欢阅读),“I enjoy watching movies”(我喜欢看电影),而不能说“I enjoy to watch”,这么说就是错误的。

Now, how do you know which verbs require a gerund and which words don't?

那你怎么知道哪些动词跟动名词,哪些不跟呢?

Well, you have to listen, you have to read, you have to pay attention.

这个就要靠听,靠读,靠你自己去体会了。

And that's how you learn.

你只有通过这种办法去掌握。

There are no hard and fast rules.

因为是没有硬性规定的。

3

For example, if you just use the verb 'I like', then you could say either way.

因为如果你用的动词是“I like”的话,那你跟不定式跟动名词都可以。

You could say 'I enjoy to live', sorry, 'I like to live', 'I like living', either way would be okay with the verb 'like'.

你可以说“I enjoy to live”,抱歉,你可以说“I like to live”,也可以说“I like living”,两种都可以。

But not with 'enjoy'.

但“enjoy”就不可以。

And 'enjoy’ is actually a higher level verb than 'like'.

事实上,“enjoy”比“like”要高级那么一点点。

So it's better if you use this one, okay?

所以大家最好用“enjoy”,好吗?

'I enjoy living...'

用“I enjoy living……”

Remember that.

记住了哈。

Next, suppose you're asked about family.

接下来,假设考官问到了你的家庭。

"Tell me about your family."

“谈谈你的家庭吧。”

And you start to talk about, you know, I come from a large family, or I come from a small family, I live with my brother…

你开始说了,“I come from a large family”(我来自一个大家庭),或者“I come from a small family”(我来自一个小家庭),“I live with my brother”(我和我的兄弟住在一起)……。

But instead of saying 'broder', you pronounce it 'brother'.

但你要说“brother”,不能说“broder”。

So now it's a pronunciation issue.

这又涉及到了发音的问题。

These are some of the points you're, you're graded on, right?

发音也是考官的评分标准之一对吧?

Pronunciation, grammar, expressions and overall fluency.

发音、语法、表达能力和整体流利程度,发音就是其中的一个。

So pronunciation matters if you say broder, fader, moder, that's not good.

所以发音是很重要的,如果你说的是“broder”,“fader”,“moder”,那就不好了。

You should be saying the 'th' properly like a 'th'.

“th”的发音就要有“th”发音的样子。

'My brother', 'my father', 'my mother', okay?

是“My brother”,“my frother”,“my mother”,好吗?

When we say that 'th' sound, the tongue comes out a little bit between the teeth and goes back.

发“th”的时候,舌头要伸到上下牙外面,然后收回。

And if you have this kind of mistake, then work on that pronunciation, okay?

如果你有犯这类错误,那请你多加练习,好吗?

It will sound much more refined.

多练就能发好听的。

Next, this person said 'My brother economist'.

接下来,这位同学说“My brother economist”(我哥哥经济学家)。

Okay, lots of grammar mistakes there, right?

这句话有很多语法错误,大家看出来了吧?

Many mistakes.

很多错误。

It should be 'My brother is an economist', or 'My brother's an economist', right.

应该说“My brother is an economist”(我哥哥是一名经济学家),也可以说“My brother's an economist”,好吧。

You can contract it also.

这里也可以缩略。

But you need to have the verb 'to be', you need to have the article.

但需要有动词“to be”,还需要有冠词。

And if it's 'economist', you need to say 'an economist' right.

所以如果你要说“economists”,那你要说“an economist”,对吧。

'An engineer', 'an accountant', not 'a economist' because that would also be incorrect.

或者说“An engineer”,“an accountant”,不能说“a economist”,因为这也是不正确的。

Because we use 'an' when before a word that sounds like a vowel, okay?

因为发音像元音的单词前要用冠词“an”,好吗?

Not just that starts with a vowel, but that sounds like a vowel.

不只是发音是元音的单词,还包括发音像元音的单词。

Next, the weak answer would be 'He working bank', alright?

接下来这个比较不好的回答是“He working bank”。

Grammar mistakes again.

又犯了语法错误。

No.

这是不对的。

Should be 'He works...', alright?

应该是“He works...”,好吗?

Third person, present simple, 'He works in a bank', alright?

第三人称,一般现在时,“He works in a bank”,好吗?

Again, the article, the third person, the 's',

再说一遍,冠词,第三人称,“s”,

And make sure even if you know this, that 'He works', that it should be 'He works',

而且,还要确保,即便你知道这一点,即便你知道是“He works”,应该用“He works”,

make sure you are pronouncing it in a way that I can hear the 's'.

也要确保你在发音的时候让我听到那个“s”。

Don't say it's so fast that the examiner can't hear the 's', okay?

不要说太快,让考官听不清那个“s”,好吗?

Make sure you do say the 's', 'He works in a bank', 'He lives...here,

请务必发出“s”的音,“He works in a bank”,“He lives...”。

Alright. Get used to that.

大家一定要养成这个习惯。
