Nuclear waste is a rough topic.

核废料是一个比较烫嘴的话题。

It's part of the reason people are opposed to nuclear power.

这也是人们反对应用核能的原因。

We're getting electricity today, sure, but we're creating something which could pollute for centuries.

我们是得到电能了,没错,但留下来的东西可是会污染好几百年的。

People ain't onboard with that.

正因为如此,在这个问题上,大家至今仍没有达成一致。

We got a question on our Facebook page, from Kody Vincent,

asking exactly what I've been wondering since that crappy Superman: Quest for Peace movie.

He wants to know if we can launch nuclear waste into the sun.

The sun's life of giving heat and light are a result of a constant nuclear fusion reaction.

太阳的发光发热都是持续不断的核聚变反应的结果。

If we were able to safely send the nuclear material towards the sun, it would burn up.

如果我们能安全地将核材料送到太阳上,那些材料就会燃烧光光。

Honestly, it would never even come close to the sun; It would burn up long before it got there.

But that's not the point.

Can we shoot it at the sun? Sure!

When you picture nuclear waste,

提到核废料,

you probably think of the Simpsons and picture glowing rods or bubbling green goop.

你可能会想到《辛普森一家》里发光的核棒或冒泡的绿色粘液。

But nuclear waste is actually an umbrella term for a bunch of different things.

但核废料实际上是很多种东西的总称。

Sure, actual nuclear rods but also, clothing and tools used in radioactive areas, and even spare parts exposed to the radiation.

当然了,实实在在的核棒肯定是包含在内的,除此之外还有放射性区域使用的衣物和工具,甚至还有暴露在辐射中的备件等。

Of that, only 3% is high level radioactive material and that's the only bit we'd be launching.

在所有这些东西里,高放射性物质只占到了3%,但它们是我们唯一要发射的东西。

In 1999, the Space Studies Institute looked at the space disposal of high level material.

早在1999年,空间研究所就研究过高放射性物质的空间处理问题。

According to their assessment, by 2020, there will be over 77,000 pounds of spent nuclear fuel rods alone on earth.

Space access is expensive at thousands of dollars a pound, so it's a bit prohibitive cost wise.

Even if money were no object, space technology has only existed for a little while, and it's not perfect.

NASA's missions do fail occasionally.

That's real crappy if it's a satellite.

It's horrendous if it's high level nuclear material.

要换作高级核材料,那就太恐怖了。

And so far, we have not even scratched the surface of the problems with this idea,

which makes me kind of sad, because I was excited about it.

Not only would we have to get into space safely, we'd have to cancel the orbital velocity of the earth.

Earth is moving real fast, you guys, and though the sun is big, it's not so big that we couldn't miss if we shot at it.

The amount of energy that it would take to cancel out Earth's orbital velocity and then aim for the sun would be astronomically high.

一方面要抵消地球轨道速度,另一方面还要瞄准太阳,所需的能量简直就是天文数字。

We'd be better off using the rocket engines to kill it with fire once we got it into space.

与其往太阳上送,还不如把它们送入太空以后直接用火箭发动机把它们给消灭了。

Maybe if we had a Superman who could safely transport nuclear material directly into the sun, sure.

但如果有个超人能帮我们安全地把核材料直接运送到太阳上,那当然是再好不过了。

Maybe.
