Hi. Welcome again to www.engvid.com. I'm Adam. In today's lesson, we're going to look at phrasal verbs again.

欢迎来到英格威英语学习网。我是亚当。今天,我们来学习动词短语。
I know everybody likes these. I've heard all the comments. So again, what are phrasal verbs?
我知道大家都喜欢动词短语。我在评论中看到了很多。再说一遍,什么是动词短语?
Phrasal verbs are a combination of a verb and a preposition that together have a very different meaning than the two words by themselves.
动词短语是由动词和介词组成的短语,该短语的意思和这两个词本身的意思截然不同。
Today's phrasal verbs are going to be with the verb "fall".
今天我们来学习“fall”相关动词短语。
"Fall apart", "fall out", "fall behind", "fall for", "fall through", "fall in", "fall in with", "fall back", "fall back on".
“崩溃”,“脱落”,“落后”,“迷恋”,“落空”,“塌陷”,“偶然遇到”,“后退”,“求助于”。
Different meanings to "in" and "in with", "back, and "back on". So let's start.
“fall in”和“fall in with”的意思不同,“fall back”和“fall back on”的意思不同。我们开始讲吧。
"Fall apart" -- two meanings we're going to look at today. The first one is, basically, come apart or disintegrate or break off.
“fall apart”有两个意思。第一个是,分裂,分解或断裂。
So if any of you have ever cooked ribs -- do you like ribs? You know, like, big stack of ribs.
如果你们有人做过排骨,你们喜欢排骨吗?你知道,就是一大堆肋骨。
Boil them. Put them on the barbecue. Cook them really, really well. Then, the meat just falls apart, just falls off the bone.
可以煮排骨,可以把它们放在烧烤架上。把它们煮得非常非常好。然后,肉就散了,从骨头上脱落下来。
Very, very delicious. Another meaning of "fall apart" is to have a nervous breakdown.
非常美味。另一个意思是精神崩溃。
Excuse me. A "nervous breakdown" would be -- when someone has a "nervous breakdown" -- I'm sorry -- we say they have "fallen apart".
抱歉。精神崩溃就是,当某人出现精神崩溃时,抱歉,我们会说他们“fall apart”。
They have lost control of themselves emotionally. So an example.
他们在情感上已经失控了。一个例子。
When does a person fall apart? For example, if I had a girlfriend for a very, very long time, and one day she comes home and she says, "Bye.
为什么一个人会崩溃呢?比如,如果我有一个交往了很久的女朋友,有一天她回家后对我说,“再见。
I'm leaving." Maybe I'll go crazy. I'll fall apart. I won't be able to work.
我要走了。也许我要变疯了。我要崩溃了。不能去上班了。
I won't be able to sleep. I won't be able to do anything. That's not necessarily the way things would happen, but for some people, that's how it happens.
我睡不着觉了。做不了任何事情。事情不一定会这样发生,但是对一些人来说,就是这样发生的。
They just fall apart. Okay. "Fall out" -- so I'm walking down the street. I'm happy. I'm bouncing around.
他们就会崩溃。“fall out”,我在街上走着,很开心,蹦蹦跳跳的。
Something falls out of my pocket. Basically, it comes out and falls to the ground. That's the very basic term, "fall out".
有东西从我口袋里掉出来了。基本上,它掉在了地上。这就是它基本的意思,“掉落”。
Another meaning for "fall out" is when you have a fight or a quarrel with someone.
另外一个意思是,当你和某人打架或者争吵时,
You talk about something; you get into a disagreement; you fight; and then, you don't speak to each other anymore.
你们会拌嘴,你们会陷入争执,你们会打上一架,然后你们就彼此不说话。
So basically, you had a "falling out" -- if you want the noun of it. A "falling out", a fight. Okay?
基本上就是你们闹翻了,这是其名词的意思。一次“争吵”,一次打斗。
Another meaning -- a third meaning -- is basically consequences.
第三个意思就是,结果的意思。
For example, in a war, there's a big bomb dropped somewhere, and then all the fall out -- all the things that fell out -- then, all the results.
比如,在一场战争中,有个炸弹掉了下来,然后所有的后果,所有掉下来的东西,所有的后果。
"The fall out for this attack was that many people were left homeless or that many people were killed or that the fight extended."
“这次攻击的后果是,很多人都无家可归,很多人失去了生命,战斗仍在持续。
So the "fall out" means the result or the consequence of something that happened, usually something bad.
所以“fall out”指的是某件发生的事带来的后果,通常是某件不好的事。
And then, the consequences, of course, are also bad. "Fall behind" -- again, more than one meaning.
然后,结果当然也是不好的。“fall behind”也不止有一个意思。
The first meaning of "fall behind" means to be a little bit behind. All my friends are walking.
“fall behind”的第一个意思是稍微落后一点。我所有的朋友都在走路。
I'm walking with my friends. They're walking fast, and I start to fall behind. So another word is "lag".
我在和我的朋友一块走路。他们走得很快,我开始落后了。另外一个词是“lag”。
"Lag" means to be behind, not keep pace with. We also use this when we talk about debts.
“Lag”的意思是落后,没有跟上。我们在谈论债务时也使用这个单词。
Like, for example, you have to pay bills. Every month, the phone company sends you a bill.
比如,你得支付账单。每个月,电话公司会给你寄账单。
Then you pay it and you pay it. But one month, you missed.
然后你就支付账单。但是有一个月,你错过了。
So then, the next month, you have to pay the last month's bill and this month's bill.
下个月,你需要支付上个月和这个月的账单。
But you don't have enough money, so you let a little bit more go. Now, you're starting to fall behind on your payments.
但是你没有足够的钱,所以你就有更多的未付账单。现在,你开始拖欠还款了。
Eventually, the bank will come and take your phone, take your car, take your puppy -- whatever you have that's worth any money.
最终,银行会派人过来拿走你的手机,拿走你的汽车,你的小狗,任何你拥有的值钱的东西。
That's basically "fall behind". Of course, if I drop this here, it will fall behind me.
这就是“fall behind”。当然,如果我把这个放在这里,它就会掉队。
But that's too simple. "Fall for" -- a couple of interesting meanings.
但是那太简单了。“fall for”-有一些有意思的意思。
"Fall for" -- one, when you "fall for something" or "fall for someone" means you basically fall in love. Okay? I went to the bar.
“fall for”第一个意思,当你爱上某物,或者爱上某人,意思是你坠入爱河了。我去了酒吧。

I met this girl. I just "fell for" her right then and there. I fell in love. I lost control.

我遇到这个女孩。我当时就爱上她了。我坠入爱河了。我失控了。
I wanted this person. But then, her friend came and told me that for $50, he will give me her phone number.
我想要这个人。然后,她朋友过来告诉我,只要给他50美元,他就会给我她的电话号码。
So I gave him $50, and he ran away. I "fell for" his trick. Okay? So "fall for" means believe something that is not true. Okay?
我给了他50美元,然后他就跑了。我上了他的圈套。“fall for”意思是相信了某件不真实的事情。
If you are that type of person, you are gullible. I think I spelled that right. I'll have to check that later.
如果你是那种人,你就是容易上当受骗。我觉得我拼写对了。我一会儿得检查一下。
"Fall for" means believe in a trick or believe in something that is not true, or fall in love.
“fall for”意思是相信了一个骗局,或者相信了某件不真实的事情,或者坠入爱河。
"Fall through" -- "fall through" means when you have a plan or you try to do something, but then at the end, it just didn't work.
“fall through”意思是,当你有一个计划,或者尝试做什么事情时,但是最后,事情没有做成。
Your attempt failed, so it "fell through". So last month, I made vacation plans to go to Florida.
你的尝试失败了,所以它就“未能实现”。上个月,我计划去佛罗里达州度假。
And then, at the last minute, my boss told me, "No. You have to come into work because there's an emergency.
然后,在最后一刻,我的老板告诉我,“不行。你得来上班,因为现在有个紧急情况。
We need you to do something." So my plans "fell through" -- fell through the floor, basically, and didn't come out.
我们需要你做些事情。我的计划“落空”。就是落空了,没有实现。
Now, if you're walking along the street again and there's a sewer
如果你在街上走,这里有个下水道,
where the water goes in after the rain and you drop your key and they "fall through" the hole -- so "fall through".
下雨后水会流到里面,你的钥匙掉在了地上,它们就掉到了洞里,这就是“fall through”。
That's a simple explanation. "Fall in" -- this is more, like, military.
这是一个简单的解释,“fall in”,它更多的用在军事中。
When a drill sergeant says, "Fall in", everybody stands in line in a straight line.
当一个操练军士说,“fall in”,大家都站成一条直线。
We all fall in line. It also basically means "get with the program" or do what you're supposed to do.
我们都排好队。它还有个意思是“按计划行事”或者做你应该做的事情。
In a company, a boss, for example a supervisor, wants all his staff to "fall in line" with the program.
比如,在一家公司中,一个老板,一个主管想让他所有的员工都按项目的计划行事。
He wants everybody to understand and follow what is needed to be done. "Fall in with" -- basically, it's the same idea.
他希望每个人都能理解并遵循该做的事情。“fall in with”基本上是同一个意思。
It means you follow something, but you do it unintentionally. Okay?
它的意思是你追随某件事,但你是无意中做了这件事。
So for example, if you fall in with the wrong people, you somehow joined these people that you didn't really want to, but somehow, it happened.
举个例子,如果你和错误的人待在一起,你不知怎么地加入了你不想加入的人,但不知怎么地,事情发生了。
So when you hear about gangs in America, for example, a lot of these kids who join gangs basically fell in with these people
比如,当你听说了美国的帮派,比如,很多加入帮派的孩子基本上都是和这些人打成一片,
because that's what was around them, and now, they're part of the gang; they're gangsters.
因为那就是他们身边的人,现在他们是这个帮派的一部分,他们是匪徒。
They didn't want to be, but they fell in with the wrong people who pulled them into the gang.
他们不想成为匪徒,但是他们和错误的人打成一片,这些人把他们拉入帮派。
"Fall back" -- again, I could fall back or backwards -- both okay. "Fall back" and "fall back on" are two different things.
“fall back”,我可以向后退或者向后倒,两个都可以。“fall back”和“fall back on”是两个不同的短语。
"Fall back on" -- for example, I'm a teacher. But if for some reason, I couldn't teach anymore, I also went to chef school.
“fall back on”,比如,我是一个老师。出于某个原因,我不能再教学了,我想要去厨师学校。
I know how to cook. So I can always fall back on my cooking skills to get a job. So it's like "rely", "rely on something".
我知道怎么做饭。所以我总能依靠我的厨艺找到一份工作。所以就像“rely”,“rely on something”。
I always have a backup, something that I can do if something else doesn't work.
我总是有一个备用计划。如果某事行不通的话我可以去做的事情。
I can fall back on that. "Fall back" also means, like, get behind, for example in bills, payments, or bills.
我可以依靠某事。“Fall back”也有“落后”的意思,例如在账单或付款中。
"I fell back on my payments. I have to catch up now." So there you go. Some phrasal verbs for "fall".
“我拖欠了款项,我现在得补交了。”就是这个意思。这就是“fall”有关的几个短语。
By the way, this was a request -- a couple of requests for this. And that's why we have them here.
顺便说一下,这节课是应邀做的,有些人想学习这节课。所以我们就讲了这些短语。
