Compound nouns are nouns that are combined to form new nouns with new meanings.
复合名词是指将名词组合成具有新意义的新名词。
They are written as singular words, two words, or put together with a hyphen.
复合名词可以写成一个单词、两个单词组合或用连字符连接的形式。
They usually have two parts.
通常来说是两部分。
The first tells you what kind of object or person it is or what its purpose is.
第一部分是告诉你这是什么样的物体或人,或者它的目的是什么。
And the second part identifies the object or person.
而第二部分是指对象或人。
Compound nouns are usually made with two nouns.
复合名词通常由两个名词组成。
Motorcycle. Bus stop. Ice cream.
比如说摩托车。公交站。冰激凌。
With an adjective and a noun.
还有由一个形容词和一个名词组成的。
Software. Blackboard. Full moon.
软件。黑板。满月。
With a gerund and a noun.
还有由一个动名词和一个名词组成的。
Washing machine. Swimming pool. Flying saucer.
洗衣机。游泳池。飞碟。
With a noun and a verb.
还有由一个名词和一个动词组成的。
Sunrise. Haircut. Rainfall.
日出。理发。降雨。
Or even with an adjective and a gerund.
甚至还有由一个形容词和一个动名词组成的。
Dry cleaning. Public speaking.
干洗。公众演讲。
It's important to remember that compound nouns often have a meaning that is different from that of the two separate words.
重要的是要记住,复合名词的意思通常与这两个单独的单词的意思不同。
