Oh, what a great book.

啊,真是一本好书啊。

Thank you, Jessica Whitehead.

谢谢你,杰西卡·怀特黑德。

Are you doing an IELTS exam or will you be doing an IELTS exam in the future?

你要考雅思了吗?你准备考雅思吗?

Special shoutout to Pedro, thank you for helping me on this, and rock your exam.

在此,我要特别给Pedro打call,感谢你帮我准备这个,祝你考场大获全胜。

You're going to do it, boy.

你能行的,孩子。

If you're studying IELTS, there's one section in the test that is difficult.

如果你正在准备雅思考试,那你就会在这门考试中遇到一个难度较大的部分。

They're all difficult, but it's the reading section.

虽然雅思考试每个部分都很难,但我们今天要说的是格外难的阅读部分。

So, when you're doing your test, you have to read the passage quickly,

因为在考这部分的时候,你要快速地阅读材料,

you have to get all of the wonderful information, and then you have to answer the questions.

抓住所有重要的内容,然后回答材料后面的问题。

So, what I want to help you do is something really cool called speed reading.

我想教给大家的是一种叫作“快速阅读”的阅读技巧。

When I was in grade 2, my teacher taught me something that was amazing.

记得我还在上二年级的时候,我的老师就教了我一些超棒的技能。

Usually when you read something, you take your little finger and you read along like this.

一般情况下,大家在阅读东西的时候,都会用你们的小手指这样指着阅读。

So my teacher taught me at the young age of eight to get a bookmark,

但我的老师在我8岁的时候就教我用书签阅读了,

and instead of reading each word, you're going to read one whole sentence with an eyescape.

不再逐字逐字地阅读,而是逐句逐句地跳跃式阅读。

So, instead of reading word by word with your little finger,

也就是说,不能再用手指指着单个字单个字地阅读,

you're going to put a bookmark on the sentence and you're going to focus on the sentence.

而是放一个书签在一个句子下面,把重点放到句子上。

This allows you to read something much faster.

因为这样做能够帮助大家提高阅读速度。

So, put your little finger away and grab a bookmark or a piece of paper.

所以,请把你的小手指收起来,取一个书签或一个纸条。

So, number six is: Use a bookmark.

这就是我们的第六个快速阅读技巧:利用书签。

It helps you absorb the information faster.

因为这种阅读方式能够帮助大家更快地吸收信息。

Another thing that you can do or not do is when you're reading: "The pizza was a wide pizza with ham and pineapple.

另一个我们可有可无的阅读习惯是当我们在阅读“披萨是有火腿和菠萝的大披萨。

It was the most exiting flavours, it was..."

味道是最令人兴奋的味道,它是……”的时候的一个习惯。

Don't read out loud.

不要读出声。

Two reasons: One, there're other people around you that you're probably disturbing,

有两个原因:其一,你身边的人可能会被你打扰到,

and there's probably been a scientific study that if you move your lips,

其二,貌似有科学研究表明,如果你在阅读的时候动了嘴唇,

you're doing extra work and you're kind of wasting time.

就等于你做了额外的工作,就等于在浪费时间。

Try and close your mouth.

所以,请试着闭上你的嘴巴阅读。

Don't: "Ra-ra-ra-ra" under your breath, don't move your lips.

不要“叭叭叭叭”地小声读,也不要动嘴唇。

Just absorb it and read it.

吸收文章的内容就好了。

This helps you go through it faster and ultimately get that high score that you've all been looking for.

这么做能够帮助大家更快地完成阅读,继而拿到你们一直梦寐以求的高分。

Another tip is to pay attention to important key words.

另一个建议是关注文章中重要的关键词。

So, these are going to be things like dates and times, numbers, and proper nouns.

这类词一般都是日期和时间、数字和专有名词之类的词。

So, please tell me you know what a proper noun is.

告诉我,你知道什么是专有名词好吧。

A proper noun is a place or a person.

专有名词就是指一个地方或一个人的词。

It starts with a capital letter.

以大写字母开头的。

So, one really, really good thing you can do is you can take your little highlighter and circle the important words.

这个时候,一个,一个非常好的习惯就是,大家可以拿出你们的荧光笔,把重要的单词都圈出来。

When you come back to the reading section or when you've read it, it sticks in your brain more.

这样,当你再次回到阅读部分,或是在正式阅读的时候,你就能加深对这些词的印象。

This is good for practicing, too.

这个习惯在平时练习的时候也很有用。

Some articles and some things have special punctuation.

此外,有些文章,有些地方还会有特殊的标记。

So, dashes.

比如,破折号。

Dashes are a little line here and a little line at the end.

破折号就是这里的小短线,还有后面的这个小短线。

3

There's a very, very good reason why they've used dashes,

文章使用破折号是有非常非常好的理由的,

and that is they're telling you that this information is really important.

用破折号就等于他们在告诉你,这个信息非常重要。

It's giving you something extra or something that changes the idea about the sentence.

可能是一些额外补充的信息,也可能是改变句意的信息。

So, the information between dashes or even between commas is put there for a reason,

所以,破折号之间的信息,甚至是两个逗号之间的信息被放在那里都是有原因的,

and it's probably got some wealth of information,

这个位置的信息量可能非常的大,

maybe the answer to question number seven.

说不定就是某一个问题的答案。

Some readings that you have not necessarily on IELTS,

有一些阅读材料还会用到,但雅思的阅读材料不一定啊,

but a newspaper if you're reading something for fun...

比如报纸,如果你是为了好玩儿而阅读的话...

Do people read for...?

人们会为…?

Yeah, they do read for fun, Ronnie. Okay.

嗯,大家确实是会为了乐趣阅读的,Ronnie。那好吧。

Is a special font.

特殊字体。

So, if the words are bold which means they're bigger;

比如单词是粗体,意思就是字号更大一些;

or if they're written in italics which means, like, handwriting;

或者是斜体书写的,就是有点像手写的那种;

or if the words are underlined-

再或者是单词有下划线,

this is going to give you some really strong information that it's important because they made it like this.

这些标记都是非常有力的信息,表示这些信息很重要,因为这些标记本来就是这么用的。

When you first begin your IELTS test in the reading section,

大家第一次做雅思阅读的时候,

always read the questions first,

一定要先看问题,

then you'll know what information you're looking for.

看了问题你才知道你要找的是什么信息。

If you just read it willy-nilly without thinking about the questions, you've wasted a lot of time.

如果你不考虑问题,只是漫无目的地阅读,那你就会浪费很多时间。

So read the questions first, then go back and get the information that you need.

所以,请先看问题,再回过头去找你需要的信息。

And about paragraphs, this is a tricky thing that they do.

关于段落,这个问题还挺伤脑筋的。

I want you to read the first sentence, it's called the topic sentence.

我希望大家先看段落起始句,也就是所谓的“主旨句”。

The topic sentence has...We'll say "the meat" or the importance of the paragraph.

主旨句有……我们所说的“肉”,也即段落的重要信息在里面。

Maybe in the middle of the paragraph they've got some information and it's useless, really,

因为段落中间的部分可能含有一些无用信息,真的,

because maybe the idea has changed.

因为段落大意已经转向了。

So, the best thing you can do is read the first topic sentence, skim the rest of it,

所以,你能尽的最大努力就是阅读段首的主旨句,然后跳过后面的内容,

and concentrate on the last, because maybe the idea has changed halfway through the sentence.

把注意力集中在段落的结尾句,因为可能句子说到一半,意思就变了。

If you're going for your IELTS, good luck.

如果你要考雅思,那么祝你好运。

It's hard, but you can do it.

雅思很难,但大家还是能考过的。

For more IELTS tips, stay tuned. Bye-bye.
