Now let's begin. Why do we gossip? Why does it seem so enjoyable sometimes? To gossip means to talk about someone who isn't there.
现在我们开始吧。我们为什么会八卦？为什么有的时候还挺享受说八卦？八卦的意思就是谈论一个不在场的人。
It's generally frowned upon and discouraged, since you may end up upsetting and hurting the person you're talking about.
说八卦通常会让别人不开心或者气馁，因为最后可能会伤害到你谈论的人。
You may think that all gossip is intended to put someone down, but there are actually other reasons you may end up talking about someone behind their back.
你可能觉得大家聊八卦都是为了打击某人，但背后议论别人还有其他原因。
Before we start, we'd like to mention that this video is for educational purposes only, and it's created to help us understand why we do the things we do.

It's not meant to justify, glorify, or to condone gossiping.
并不是为了美化或宽恕“八卦”，给“八卦”正名。
This act can be harmful and negatively impact someone's mental and emotional wellbeing.
“八卦”这种行为可能是有害的，会对一个人的精神和情感健康产生负面影响。
With that said, here are eight of the most likely reasons why we gossip.
也就是说，以下是“八卦”产生的8个最有可能的原因。
Number one, to break the ice.
第一，打破僵局。
Has there been a time where the only thing you had in common with someone you just met was a mutual acquaintance?
你有没有经历过那么一段时间，就是和某个刚刚认识的人唯一的共同点就是认识彼此？
Since the best way to break the ice with someone you just met is to find some common ground to talk about,
因为和刚认识的人打破僵局的最好方法是找到共同话题
it may be no surprise that you would try to make small talk by gossiping about someone you both know and gossiping about someone you both know may be the way you end up getting to better know each other.
毫无疑问，你会试图通过八卦你们都认识的人来闲聊，而八卦你们都认识的人可能是你们相互了解的方式。
Two, to stay in the loop.
第二，保持消息灵通。
Do you live in a small town or a tight knit community?
你住在小城镇还是关系紧密的社区？
Since most people know each other already, gossiping about one another may be a way people stay in the loop about those in the community.
因为大多数人已经互相了解了，互相八卦可能是人们了解社区内其他人的一种方式。
And this is especially true if the person you're talking about is really private and keeps to themself.
如果你谈论的那个人非常隐私、不怎么跟别人说话的话，“八卦”就是了解他的一个好方式。
There may be no other way to know anything about them than by listening to gossip in town.
或许除了听镇子上的闲言碎语，没有其它什么办法来了解他们。
Number three, to fit in.
第三，适应环境。
Do you find yourself gossiping from time to time to fit in with your peers?
你有没有发现自己会为了和同事相处而时不时地说别人闲话？
If you're surrounded by people who love to chit chat and gossip all the time, then chances are you're going to go along with it too.
如果你周围都是喜欢闲聊和八卦的人，那么你可能也会受他们影响。
Your desire for social acceptance may outweigh your desire to do the right thing.
你对得到社会认可的渴望可能会超过你做正确事情的欲望。
After all, gossiping may be the only way to feel like you can get closer to your peers and belong in their group.
毕竟，八卦可能是让你觉得和同龄人更亲近、成为他们圈子里一员的唯一方式。
Number four, to feel better about yourself.
第四，为了自我感觉良好。
Does gossiping about others make you feel good? In psychology, this is known as downward social comparisons.
八卦别人会让你感觉良好吗？在心理学上，这被称为“向下社会比较”。
It's a defensive tendency to boost your self-esteem by comparing yourself with people who may be worse off than you.
这是一种自我防御的倾向，通过把自己和境况不如你的人比较来增强自己的自尊。
While you may not like to admit it, gossiping may be a guilty pleasure because of how satisfying and comforting it may feel to judge and talk badly about someone you dislike so that you can feel better about yourself.
虽然你可能不愿意承认，但八卦大概是一种罪恶式快乐，因为对自己不喜欢的让你评头论足、说一些他的坏话很让人满足、非常畅快，这样你就能自我感觉更好。
Number five, to regain power.
第五，重获力量。
Have you ever gossiped about someone you are jealous of?
你有没有说过令你嫉妒的人的闲话？
When you come across someone you see as better than you in some way, maybe they're more or more popular or more accomplished, you may feel a need to tear them down.
当你遇到一个你认为在某些方面比自己更好的人，他们更受欢迎或者更有成就，那么你可能会觉得有必要将他们推倒。
You may gossip about them because you unconsciously believe it will allow you to regain power and put the spotlight back on you.
你可能会八卦他们，因为你潜意识里认为这会让你重获力量，让聚光灯重新回到你身上。
It may make you feel superior to those you feel jealous of.
这会让你觉得自己比那些你嫉妒的人优越。
Number six, to have a distraction.
第六，分散注意力。
Do you end up gossiping about someone when you have nothing else to do?
当你无事可做的时候你是否会开始八卦别人呢？
After all, it is an easy but entertaining way to get you and your friends interested and engaged.
毕竟，这是一种让你和朋友感兴趣并参与其中的简单而有趣的方法。
There may be drama and excitement that can come from gossiping with your friends and to people who don't have much going on in their lives at the moment.
和你的朋友已经那些目前生活中没有太多事情的人聊天时可能会很戏剧、很兴奋。
So it's a fun, but harmful distraction, that may help you pass the time.
所以这是一种有趣但有害的消遣，能够帮你打发时间。
Number seven, to feel closer to others.
第七，与他人更亲近。
Did your friend really get into a relationship with someone they just met or perhaps they've just ended a serious relationship?
你有朋友和刚认识的人谈恋爱了吗？或者他们刚刚结束了一段真挚的感情？
When this happens, do you have a habit of gossiping about the people you care about and talk about them behind their back?
当这种情况发生时，你是否会谈论你关心的人并在背后议论他们？
Those who crave intimacy and connection, but don't quite know how to communicate it in a healthy way and honest way may turn to gossip instead.
那些渴望亲密和联系，但又不知道如何以健康坦诚的方式交流的人可能会转而在背后闲聊。
It may be a way to ask all the things they've been curious about, but too embarrassed to say to their face.
这可能是一种询问所有好奇但又不好意思当面说的事情的方式。
And number eight, to hold people accountable.

You gossip to hold other people accountable. Those who don't like resolving conflicts or confrontation may let out their feelings by gossiping about them instead.

It may be a way for you to open up and air out your grievances about someone who had upset you without confronting them directly.
