What is Tufting?
In the past few years, Tufting has been a growing trend, not only across the globe, but also in China.
During the pandemic, various DIY activities suddenly rose in popularity, probably because we are staying at home a lot, we're exploring a simpler and more wholesome lifestyle.
People are trying their hand at everything from painting and furniture restoration to pottery and candle making.
Social media like TikTok, 抖音, Instagram, have boosted the popularity of traditional crafts during the pandemic, as artists and novices alike get to grips with new creative hobbies during those slow month of quarantine and lockdowns.

One of these revivals of traditional craft is tufting, 而 tufting 就是其中的一种。
Tufting
Tuftingis the way soft, fluffy rugs are often made. This textile weaving technique is a midpoint between a shaggy carpet and embroidery.
中文把它翻译成“簇绒”, 更通俗的方法也叫它“戳戳绣”。
它本来是用来制作地毯或者说保暖服装的一种传统工艺，其实跟咱们中国北方一种叫“墩绣”的传统工艺有异曲同工之妙。
简单来说，它是综合了这种毛绒地毯和刺绣的手工活动。
You're basically weaving the design into a shaggy carpet. With your yarn as your ink, you can draw textured patterns and pictures on a plain canvas.
You can do this either by hand using a punch needle, or with a really cool tufting gun.
“戳戳绣”的过程就是在一块底布上先画好草图, 然后用毛线把图案戳上去。
通常tufting用的两种工具, 要么是punch needle就是手拿着一根比较粗的绣针：
或者就是社交媒体上, 你经常看见别人晒的那种被叫做“突突枪”的簇绒枪tufting gun.

其实以前tufting主要是在工厂里制作毛绒地毯的一种工艺，而现在大火是因为2018年一位DIY艺术家在网上开始建立起tufting社群，而他使用的就是一款简单的电动簇绒枪。
In the past, that was used in factories to manufacture carpets.
But a few years back, a DIY artist Tim Eads started a tufting community online.
He was using a more user friendly tufting gun, the one that you can buy and actually use at home.

Creative artists and novices alike are posting their tufting pieces on social media, and they started to go viral.
In China right now, especially in first tier cities like Beijing and Shanghai, there are many tufting workshops where you can go and get some instructions, and get the materials and equipment, and just make your art there.

Why did tufting become popular？
