Hi everyone. Great news, we have a new course for you.

Yeah.

我们的新课程【英文名著扫盲班】上线了, 璐璐和安澜陪你读英语国家家喻户晓的10本经典,带你走进10个风格迥异, 但都精彩非常的故事。

So安澜, the English name for this course is called Bluffer's Guide to Literature, why Bluffer’s Guide?

We chose the name Bluff’s Guide because we understand that you might be a bit busy, or you might not have the time, or you might not even be able to find the book.

So instead of actually having to read the entire book, well we hope you do read the book, we hope that this course will give you enough knowledge to bluff other people. So if someone asks you or makes a reference about these books, you know enough about the book to carry on the conversation.

其实就是下回别人再谈起来, 或者说提到这些经典里面的桥段, 你至少可以装一下。

Yes.

We're not just excited because we have this new course, but also because this new course is something that ,安澜 and I, we've been trying to do for ages.

We both love literature, we both love reading, we love books, everything to do with books.

Or basically big book nerds or book warms.

We are pretty nerdy when it comes to books.

我跟安澜都是那种书虫属性的。

So I thought in this intro for our new course, you can talk a little bit about our experiences with books, and why literature matters.

Lulu, tell me why do you like book so much? Why do you like reading so much.

All right, this goes back to when I was really little.

You know how parents would tell little kids bed time stories, 家长都会给小孩讲那种哄睡故事, but when I was a little, I wouldn't fall asleep listening to those stories, I get even more excited.

So I'd be like, my mom was falling asleep, then I said, mom wake up what happen next?

And then eventually I just lost the patience and I taught myself how to read so that I can read stories, I would say that was the beginning of my very long romance with books, and then I started reading books and I never stopped.

What type of books?

For me, really my primary interest, I know this doesn't sound like very in-depth or intellectual, I love mystery, suspense, crime, detective sort of books.

Ah yes, Agatha Christie, Sherlock Holmes…

Hm, the classics, but also lots of other styles. I have never been interested in romance. What about you?

I'm not very interested in romance, but I was saying my situation is probably quite similar. My stories are quite similar to yours.

I love Eden. When I was younger, my dad would tell me stories from history, the Greek myth, for example. So I was constantly hearing all of these stories.

And when I was younger, it actually took me a little bit longer to learn how to speak than other kids. And my parents actually say that I learned how to read before I learned how to speak.

Maybe you just didn't want to speak because books are so fascinating. They are friends.

Pretty much. I was always in the library, I was always taking out books, and I was always getting into trouble for library fines because I would like the book so much that I wouldn't want to give it back.

You’d just keep the books.

I would just keep the books, and every so often I’d to go to my mom to beg her to pay off the library fine.

I see. But what about your first experience reading any books in another language, I mean, for me, it's obviously English, but for you it's, I don't know, German?

Yes, I would say the first books I read in a foreign language were in German.

So I read some of the German classics, like 20th century literature; and I also used to read German newspapers and magazines, I can't do that now, my German is terrible.

But then I went on to Latin and Greek, because I studied that at university; and then finally to Chinese.

安澜的外文阅读就听起来都很高大上, 什么德文经典, 拉丁文的经典。

For me it was very simple, it was English books. And I still remember the first time that I really started reading stories in English was when I was about 10, 11.

Okay.

And it was a fun story because my mom one day came back and just brought like a whole stack of books, because they're hugely discounted books, no one wanted them, they were all completely in English.

Ok.

有一天我妈就抱回来一大堆书, 那个书全部都是那种打比如说一折甚至半折这种, 特别便宜一堆书没有人要的, 那些书全部都是全英文的, 而且是 abridged versions of classics.

I remember those ones.

其实就是那种缩减版的名著, usually for younger readers, I think.

When I was teaching, I used to… they called readers for some of the language students I used to teach.

And the very first book that I read completely in English when I was 11, the book is actually Treasure Island.

I see, so that's why we discuss Treasure Island in the course.

Yes, for nostalgic reasons.

我们也把《金银岛》放在了这一期的书单里面. It is a classic. And then as I grew older, in high school I started really devouring books, and really reading every day.

And in university, I read probably about 100 pages, for a long period, I was reading 100 pages or more in English every day.

God, that's… I don’t think I could read 100 pages in English myself every day.

But it was really just interest. This is also what we want to show in this course, reading is fun, stories are fun. It's not one of those courses that want to teach you, ok, this is the grammar they used, this is the vocabulary you need to learn.

Nope. This is what we're aiming for in this course. We want to share the stories, and we also want to show you the background of those stories, and why these stories are important.

They're not just words, they’re not just grammar, they’re actual stories that have a huge cultural impact.

Exactly, huge impact in English speaking countries, on their culture, and also just in general, on people's mentality.

But that brings us to this question, why read literature? Why do we need to read literature?为什么要读文学?Is literature still relevant?

From my point of view, I think reading literature, reading stories, primarily is about experiencing different lives, lives that you otherwise never could have lived.

I completely agree, because there's something in us as humans, as people, we love a good story. And being able to experience different cultures, experience different worlds.

When I was a kid, I remember one of the books that I read and I really, really loved was the tales of Marco Polo.

Is that why you came to China in the first place?

Partly that was one of the reasons. Yep.

It was just exciting to read about these different lives, there's different history, the background. You can feel the experiences, you can feel what it's like to walk through the desert and the mountains.

And that is also another reason why it’s important to read literature because you are with the characters, increases that sense of empathy.

就是这种同理心.

You can actually see what the characters are seeing, feel what the characters are feeling. This is actually very important, especially for kids.

I think kids need to read a lot of stories, need to read a lot of literature, because then they can see things from different angles, from other people's angles.

Someone said, I don't remember the exact words, but if you just live your life, you only can live one life, that is your life. But if you read literature, you get to live 1,000 lives.

And that is key. And that's what we hope to do with this course.

Yeah. But obviously reading literature has other benefits. For example, you can improve your language skills, reading, vocabulary, also writing. You read enough, that's gonna be good for your writing, and also for communication as well.

And particularly communication from a cultural perspective, because as I say, we've chosen books and novels and stories which are constantly referenced, and everyone knows about these stories in English speaking world.

对, 安澜刚才说的constantly referenced其实很重要, 就是很多时候我们要是看比如说英美剧, 你会发现大家说话的时候就有很多文化的梗, 为什么有的时候不是一个文化的, 你会觉得他刚刚说这个话, 为什么别人会有这样的反应, 或者会笑或者会怎么样, 那就是一个文化的梗, 而这些reference, 它的来源很多时候都是在这些classics.

So if you don't read these, you will have no idea what people are talking about. I give you an example, 中国人说“桃园三结义”, everybody knows what that is in reference to. But if you have never read《三国演义》, for example, then you wouldn't know what that is.

Exactly. And this I think is what we try to do with this course. This is how we're a little bit different.
