A double dose of misery.

One Bay Area man says he tested positive for Covid and was diagnosed with monkeypox at the same time.
"I think the Covid was first, and that's what made it really weird, because I didn't actually realize I had the monkeypox until I start breaking out."
Mitcho Thompson of Sebastopol says shortly after he tested positive for COVID at the end of June and was feeling wiped out, he noticed red lesions on his back, legs, arms and neck.
"The doctor was very certain that I have monkeypox and that I had both.
Because that was the question. Could I get them at the same time? And he was, 'Yes, yes, yes.'"
Mitcho says that one-two punch of Covid and monkeypox viruses led to weeks of misery.

He says he felt like he had a horrible flu. He had trouble breathing, fever, chills, body aches, and skin lesions.

"Really sick. And the worst of it was honestly where I just could barely get out of bed and you could barely get a drink of water."
Dr. Dean Winslow, professor of medicine and infectious diseases specialist at Stanford, says,
while it's rare, it is possible for someone to get both monkeypox and COVID at the same time.
"It's certainly not impossible for that to occur. You know, it's just incredibly bad luck. But they are very different viruses."
He says COVID is much more transmissible than monkeypox, which is known as an Orthopoxvirus.
Mitcho says he's finally starting to feel better, and has learned that given all he's been through, sometimes laughter is the best medicine.
