It’s said you loved monsters since you were a child.

If those monsters are reflections of human, what do you want to say through those monsters?

Well each creature in each movie represents something different.

And the ghost in Devil’s Backbone represents the best.

In Crimson Peak same plot stands.

You know, the creatures in Pacific Rim represent consumerism or the force of nature.

And in the case of Shape of Water, the creature serves the parable that we are creating a fable about accepting and embracing the other.

The most other creature in the film is the creature, the amphibian god.

And I think it's very important that the other characters are also seen as outsiders and they come together around that figure.

It represents the the fact that we can see beauty or fear and things that are different from us.

Look, I know, I think love can happen beyond romantic love: father to son, brother to brother, you can love cinema, and it’s healing and as beautiful as love literature and it’s as healing as loving someone.

What do you think of Mexico as a country and do you think you are influenced by its culture?

Well, I come from there, I grew up there, and I kept growing and growing in other countries.

I’m still growing and left when I was 33 so I was fully formed as an adult.

My roots are Mexican in the same way that if you come from China or France or Italy you're going to bring a certain point of view with you, no matter what you're talking about.

I'm sure that the beauty and the sense of scope that a European filmmaker or a Chinese filmmaker has is very specific. So is mine.

And in the movie, and in my movies in general you can see how I make the magical real or I make it everyday around, I don't make it exceptional, just naturally part of life.

You can see a sunset or you can see 25-storey tall monster and the camera kind of accepts both.
