Have you ever met someone who could fake their intelligence to fool everyone?

They dazzle others with big words and lofty ideas convincing everyone of their vast brain power, but in the end it all turns out to be a ruse, leaving you, confused.
他们用冠冕堂皇的言辞和崇高的想法让人目眩神迷，让每个人都相信他们有聪明的脑子，但最终这一切都证明是诡计，让你感到困惑。
People like this are pseudo intellectuals, pseudo, meaning false, and intellectual meaning an intelligent person.
这样的人是伪知识分子，伪的意思是假，知识分子的意思是聪明人。
But how can we spot pseudo intellectuals before we get sucked into their false persona.
但是，我们怎样才能在被假知识分子的假人格所吸引之前发现他们的伪装呢。
To learn more about this, here are five signs someone is faking their intelligence.
为了能更详细了解，这里有五个迹象表明有人在装聪明。
Number one, they overuse and misuse advanced vocabulary.
第一，他们过度使用和滥用高级词汇。
Are they like a walking thesaurus?
他们就像一本行走的同义词词典吗？
Pseudo intellectuals tend to always feel the need to inject the longest words and most advanced phrases into every conversation. Even when it's unnecessary.
伪知识分子总是觉得有必要在每次谈话中注入冗长词汇和高级短语。即使没有必要。
Instead of inviting you to lunch, they entreat you to partake in their midday sustenance ritual.
他们不邀请你共进午餐，而是恳求你参加他们中午的饮食仪式。
They use language as a tool for intimidation and self gain.
他们把语言作为威胁恐吓和谋取私利的工具。
So when you ask them to explain, they can respond with a self-satisfied smirk or personal insult.
当你让他们解释时，他们可能会以一种自鸣得意的假笑或人身侮辱作为回应。
Even worse, they often use the wrong pronunciation or meaning for their advanced phrases because they care more about showing off than really understanding what they're saying.

On the other hand, people with genuine intelligence will value clear communication.

This means using advanced vocabulary only when it's appropriate and being open to explaining things when others don't understand.

Number two, they brag about their intelligence all the time.

Do you know someone who won't stop talking about their own intelligence?

Their self-proclaimed genius is the only part of their personal identity.
他们自封的天才是他们个人身份的唯一部分。
And they don't hesitate to let everyone know about it all the time.
他们总是会毫不犹豫地让每个人都知道他们很聪明。
They constantly brag about their intellectual hobbies for no reason, complain about how their high intelligence is somehow a curse or accuse all of society of being ignorant and tasteless.
他们不断地毫无理由地吹嘘自己的知识爱好，抱怨自己的高智商是一种诅咒，或者指责整个社会无法慧眼识珠。
They take every opportunity to compare themselves to others and proclaim how they are mentally superior.

But people with genuine intelligence, won't be like this.
但真正有智慧的人不会是这样的。
Instead, they're comfortable with their mental abilities and won't need to or want to waste their time convincing people of how smart they are.
相反，他们对自己的思维能力感到满意，不需要也不想浪费时间让别人相信他们有多聪明。
Number three, they always repeat profound quotes.
第三，他们总是重复深奥的名言。
Are they constantly speaking in quotes?
他们是不是经常引用名言说话？
For every occasion, they can cite a profound saying from a high level thinker.
在任何场合，他们都能引用高级思想家的深奥名言。
Talk about family and they cite Confucius, about school detention and they cite Kafka.
谈到家庭，他们会引用孔子，谈到课后留校，他们会引用卡夫卡。
And for pop music, they'll cite Adorno.
谈到流行音乐，他们会引用阿多诺。
It sounds quite intelligent at first, but upon deeper examination, you may come to realize that the quotes aren't valuable or even relevant to the conversation.

Ultimately, pseudo intellectuals will exploit the credentials of past thinkers as a smoke screen to appear knowledgeable, rather than having any original ideas of their own.

On the flip side, people with genuine intelligence will say a quote only when it contributes real value to the discussion, rather than just to show off the big names they know.

Number four, they derail conversations with pointless intellectual questions.
第四，他们用毫无意义的智力问题破坏对话。
Can they stick to the point of a conversation without turning it into some grand intellectual argument?
他们能不把谈话变成宏大的智力争论，抓住谈话的要点吗?
No matter how casual a discussion is, a pseudo intellectual will always find a way to hijack by asking provocative, but pointless questions.
无论讨论多么随意，伪知识分子总能通过提出挑衅性但毫无意义的问题来操纵话题。
Highly abstract questions that nobody can answer or pedantic questions to undermine you.
无人能回答上来的高度抽象问题，或者贬损他人的学究式问题。
So if you say that you had a good day, they may respond with, what does it really mean to enjoy life?
如果你说你度过了美好的一天，他们可能会问，享受生活到底意味着什么？
People would genuine intelligence, on the other hand, will ask deep questions to make a meaningful contribution, indulge their curiosity and to further the main point of the discussion.
另一方面，真正聪明的人会提出深刻的问题，以作出有意义的贡献，满足他们的好奇心，并进一步推进讨论的要点。
And number five, they act like they have everything figured out.
第五，他们表现得好像什么都知道。
Are they always on about knowing how the world works?
他们总是在谈论世界是怎么运转的？
Pseudo intellectuals often have very rigid beliefs about society, politics, religion, and so on.
伪知识分子往往对社会、政治、宗教等有非常僵化的看法。
They're not open to genuine discussion.
他们不愿意进行真正的讨论。
And when faced with a difference in opinion, they'll simply state that you're wrong, insult your intelligence, inflate their own credentials and claim that their viewpoint is just too obvious to explain.
当面对不同的观点时，他们会简单地说你错了，侮辱你的智商，夸大他们的资历，声称他们的观点太明显了，无法解释。
This stands in stark contrast to people with genuine intelligence who are open-minded and who understand that the world has no simple answers.
这类人与真正有智慧的人形成鲜明对比，聪明人思想开放，明白世界没有简单的答案。
