But what happened to Henri Dunant, the man who made it all possible?

It is a sad story.

这是一个悲伤的故事。

When Dunant returned to Geneva, he spent all his time working on his new plans.

杜南回到日内瓦后,他把所有的时间都花在了他的新计划上。

He did not return to his work.

他没有回去工作。

He did not look after his business interests.

他没有照顾到自己的商业利益。

The result was that his business failed and many of his friends lost a lot of money.

结果他的生意失败了,他的许多朋友损失了很多钱。

His friends turned against him.

他的朋友转而与他作对。

Dunant had to leave the Red Cross and Geneva.

杜南不得不离开红十字会和日内瓦。

He went on supporting the work of the Red Cross for as long as he could.

他继续尽其所能地支持红十字会的工作。

But he soon became very poor.

但他很快就变得非常穷。

He had no money, no food and no home.

他没有钱,没有食物,也没有家。

People forgot all about him for many years.

多年来,人们把他忘得一干二净。

In 1895, a newspaper reporter discovered Henri Dunant.

1895年,一名报社记者发现了亨利·杜南。

He was a sick man, living in a free care home.

他是个病人,住在一家免费的疗养院里。

The newspaper reporter wrote about him.

这位报社记者写了关于他的报道。

Suddenly, Dunant was famous again.

突然间,杜南又出名了。

People sent money to help him from all over the world.

人们从世界各地寄钱来帮助他。

He received many honours.

他获得了许多荣誉。

One of them was the first Nobel Peace Prize in 1901.

其中之一是1901年的第一个诺贝尔和平奖。

And the Red Cross remembered what they owed him.

红十字会记得他们对他的亏欠。

They sent a message from Geneva, "There is no man who more deserves this honour. Without you the Red Cross would probably never have been started".

他们从日内瓦发来信息,“没有人比他更配得上这份荣誉。如果没有你,红十字会可能永远不会成立。”

But Dunant remained in the same room in the free care home.

但杜南留在了免费疗养院的那个房间里。

He gave all the money he had received to the home and to other organisations that were helping the poor.

他把他收到的所有钱都捐给了疗养院和其他帮助穷人的组织。

He said, 'It seemed to me that I had something to do, a sacred duty that would have an important effect on the human race'.

他说,“在我看来,我有事情要做,一项将会对人类产生重要影响的神圣的职责。”

Dunant died peacefully in his sleep in 1910.

1910年,杜南在睡梦中安详地去世。

But the great organisation he started still honours him every year on his birthday, May the eighth.

但他创立的这个伟大的组织仍然在每年5月8日(他的生日)向他致敬。

That day has become Red Cross, Crescent and Crystal Day.

这一天已经成为世界红十字与红新月日。
