People in southern Turkey remember the time 4:17.

It was that hour in the morning when their homes started shaking and the region's worst natural disaster in a century began.

When the earthquake happened, everything was shaking a lot.

It was throwing us from one side to the other.

We got out of bed and the wardrobe fell within the distance of just one hand span.

After that we fled and buildings collapsed.

The earthquake and its aftershocks killed more than 50 000 people in Turkey and Syria, and displaced millions.

Many analysts predicted this tragedy and Turkey's ongoing economic crisis could sway the vote, potentially unseating Recep Tayyip Erdogan who has been in power for 20 years.

But in the 11 provinces impacted by the earthquake, Erdogan finished with a higher percentage of the vote, compared to the share he received nationwide.

With almost all of the votes counted, Erdogan garnered 49.5 percent of the vote compared to 44.9 percent received by opposition candidate Kemal Klychdaroglu.

And while the vote began amid fears that a clear win for the opposition could spark violence some voters defended the elections.

Everything in our country is fair.

All elections have been fair always, they have been so for 20 years and they will continue to be so.

But as the two main candidates prepare to face off in a may 28 runoff, opposition supporters here say they want a new government, criticizing the earthquake response and the soaring prices of food and rent nationwide.

First of all, the economy should improve, everybody should continue their lives freely, oppression should end.

He says Turkey is suffering because it hosts millions of refugees more than any other country in the world.
