PhD graduate will soon return to China after being scammed to Myanmar for a year

A Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Ph.D. graduate named Zhang, who had been ensnared in a year-long cyber scam in Myawaddy, Myanmar, is set to return to China imminently, according to statements made by his elder brother on Thursday.

The revelation of Zhang's unfortunate predicament emerged when a Chinese netizen shared a video clip depicting him toiling for 18 hours a day under constant surveillance.

According to his girlfriend Yang, Zhang fell into financial distress due to speculative investments in cryptocurrency, leading to a debt of tens of thousands of yuan a year ago. During his job search, he unwittingly fell into the trap set by fraudsters, who lured him with promises of a high salary through an online platform. Although he believed he would be working as an interpreter in Singapore, he was, in reality, ensnared in a cyber fraud scheme that led him to Myanmar on August 16, 2022.
