Hidden in the deepest parts of this woodland in Shropshire is the secretive pine marten.

Pine martens are a mammal that belong to the same family as weasels and stoats.

But just a few years ago, pine martens were a very rare sight in these woods because of deforestation and hunting, their numbers fell almost to extinction in England.

While they managed to survive in parts of Scotland and Wales, they were rarely seen anywhere else.

That was until 2015, when a pine marten was spotted in a forest in Shropshire.

Leader of the Shropshire Pine Marten Projects, Stewart Edmunds, has managed to monitor the pine martens throughout the day and night, using special cameras with infrared sensors.

Pine martens usually prefer old woods with large trees that offer lots of protection.

But as these woods are quite new, conservationists are providing pine martens with boxes to nest in.

The Shropshire Pine Marten Projects have already put up 30 boxes, and thanks to new funding, are now planning on putting up another 30 in the area.
