The new United States Ambassador to China hopes to help the bilateral ties reach new heights

Jon Huntsman Jr., the new U.S. Ambassador to China, says he looks forward to bilateral ties between the two countries reaching new heights during his tenure. He anticipates that relations between the United States and China will be in better shape than ever before after President Barack Obama's official visit to Beijing in mid-November. Wang Ling has more.

Reporter: Huntsman revealed President Obama will visit Beijing in mid-November with members of the press at his residence on Saturday.

He says he is confident that China-U.S. relations will be stronger than ever before after the President's visit.

"We have President Obama who is going to be visiting in the middle of November. And so I'm here to tell you that by the end of the year we should be in better shape than ever before between the United States and China; so we'll be able to anticipate a positive tomorrow, anticipating all the potential challenges and shared interests which are many. I'm confident that by the end of the year, the U.S.-China relationship will be stronger than ever before."

Huntsman says both countries must examine complex issues such as energy, the global economy and regional security carefully, thoughtfully and comprehensively.

But he also says the two nations will be able to transcend the challenges and disagreements with a shared interest in peace, prosperity and security.

"I think we both want prosperity for our people on both sides of the Pacific. We want peace and security on both sides of the Pacific. And that means together we must work hard to ensure those ends. But I'm absolutely convinced, based on the time I spent in Asia, and based on the timed I lived in the United States, those are the goals of the people on both sides of the Pacific."

With his traditional ties to Asian countries and his command of Mandarin, the former Utah governor is expected to be a high-profile envoy.

Huntsman says the focus of his tenure as ambassador to China will be taking the China-U.S. relationship to new heights.

"By new heights specifically, when you look at energy, climate change, regional security, and global economy—if we were going to tackle all of those successfully, by definition we would have risen to the new heights."

Huntsman says he hopes that by the time he leaves China, his ambassadorship will be defined by the China-U.S. relationship having reached new heights after thirty years.
