Muslim Brotherhood's Morsi wins Egyptian presidency

The Hamas movement of the Gaza Strip and the Palestinian National Authority of the West Bank have welcomed the election of Mohamed Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood candidate, as president of Egypt.
Mursi claimed 51.73 percent of the registered vote, beating off the challenge of the former Mubarek-era Prime Minster Ahmed Shafiq.
Sunday's announcement led to scenes of jubilation on Cairo's Tahrir Square. Thousands of people had been gathered on the square since last week to protest against a controversial perceived power -grab by the Egyptian military.
In his TV address, Mursi declared that it was an historic day for the country and that he would strive to be a "president for all Egyptian".
Obama pledges continued support for transition in Egypt

U.S. President Barack Obama has pledged continued U.S. support for the transition in Egypt during a phone call with President elect Mohamed Morsi.
Obama stressed that "the United States will continue to support Egypt's transition to democracy and stand by the Egyptian people as they fulfill the promise of their revolution."
The White House says Morsi welcomed the U.S. support.
Egypt has signed a peace deal with Israel, a key U.S. ally in the Middle East region.
Turkey asks for int'l supports following Syria's downing of Turkish jet

Turkey has called a meeting of NATO member states to discuss the shooting down of one its fighter jets by Syrian forces on Friday.
Ankara claims that the jet was 13 nautical miles from Syria – in international airspace – when it was shot down.
Turkey has also accused the Damascus government of spreading disinformation about the incident. Syria claims that the jet did not identify itself and that it was flying in its airspace when it was attacked.
The incident has been deemed an act of Syrian aggression by several governments around the world.
Shenzhou-9's First Manual Docking With Tiangong-1 a Success

China has completed its first-ever manual docking procedure between a manned spacecraft and an orbiting lab module, putting it a step closer to its goal of a permanent space station.
As a highly sophisticated space maneuver, manual docking requires an astronaut to connect two orbiters traveling at 7.8 kilometers per second without a hitch.
The success of the manual docking maneuver means that China is now fully capable of transporting humans and cargo to a space orbiter.
Chinese Submersible Sets National Dive Record by Reaching 7,020 meters (updated)

From the outer space to the depths of the ocean now..
China's manned submersible, Jiaolong has returned to its mother ship after its fourth dive into the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean.
The manned deep-sea submersible reached and rested on the sea bed 7,020 meters below sea level in the Mariana Trench.
In its previous dives last week, the submersible surpassed the national record of 5,188 meters set last July.
SW China quake leaves at least four dead, over 100 injured

Four people have been confirmed dead and over 100 injured after a 5.7-magnitude earthquake hit southwest China.
Three residents have been reported dead in the county of Ninglang in Yunnan province and another in the neighboring Yanyuan County in Sichuan province.
The shallow quake struck the border of Yunnan and Sichuan provinces Sunday afternoon, followed by a 3.3-magnitude aftershock.
Local authorities have sent rescue teams to the area.
Torrential rains leave 16 dead in China

At least 16 people have been confirmed dead after torrential rains battered southern and northern regions of China over the past three days.
The rainstorms have affected the lives of millions of people in Guangxi, Guangdong and Jiangxi Provinces, as well as Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
Local meteorological authorities forecast that more heavy rainfall will hit the afected regions later today.
Chinese premier vows to promote agricultural cooperation with Argentina

Visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has vowed to boost agricultural cooperation with Argentina.
Premier Wen made the pledge during a meeting with Argentine agricultural officials and representatives at a farm near the capital Buenos Aires.
He said China is ready to expand agricultural trade with Argentina, and increase mutually-beneficial cooperation in the investment, infrastructure and research in the agriculture sector.
The Chinese Premier is on his first official visit to the South American state.
