Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore has been suspended for the rest of his term, effectively removing the state’s highest-elected judge from the bench.
A state disciplinary court ordered the suspension because Moore encouraged lower court judges to deny marriage licenses to same sex couples, six months after the Supreme Court overturned gay marriage bans nationwide.
Moore argued his administrative order was not defiance.
The same panel removed Moore from office in 2003 for refusing the remove the Ten Commandments monument from the state judicial building. Moore was later re-elected.
