Australia's competition watchdog is heralding new rules that could help drive down electricity bills for more than half-a-million households. The Competition and Consumer Commission last year proposed capping prices and forcing retailers to use the same benchmark when promoting discounts. The government has announced average customers on default plans — known as 'standing offers' — could save more than 200-dollars a year from July.
The weather bureau has downgraded tropical cyclone Oma to a sub tropical low. People on the Gold Coast are being warned to stay away from the beaches with abnormally high tides, dangerous surf and damaging winds expected to continue.
Venezuelan soldiers have opened fire on civilians trying to keep a section of the border with Brazil open to allow the delivery of humanitarian aid. One woman was killed and at least a dozen others were injured. It comes as two rival concerts have taken place on either side of a bridge linking Venezuela and Colombia.
And the Grammy-winning singer R. Kelly has been charged with multiple counts of criminal sexual abuse. The charges against the R-and-B singer relate to the alleged abuse of four people under the age of 17. Kelly denies the allegations.
