New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern will meet Scott Morrison in Melbourne today, with the issue of online extremism high on the agenda. Ms Ardern is on a two day visit to Australia, and it will be the first meeting between the two leaders since the Morrison government was re-elected in May. Mr Morrison is keen to discuss his plan to take on social media companies that allow terrorism to be streamed online. Ms Ardern has also signalled she wants to discuss Australia's deportation of Kiwi criminals — which she says has become a corrosive issue between the two countries.
At least 33 people are dead and dozens of others injured after a man set fire to an animation studio in Japan. Witnesses say the man broke into the studio in Kyoto, poured petrol on the floor and shouted "die" before setting it alight. Around 70 people were inside when the fire started. 36 are now in hospital, some in a critical condition. The 41 year old suspect has been detained and was also taken to hospital with injures.
And US president Donald Trump says an American warship has destroyed an Iranian drone in the Strait of Hormuz, after it reportedly threatened the ship by flying within 900 metres of it. The president has called on other countries to condemn Iran and protect their own ships amid rising tensions in the region. Iran declared late yesterday it had seized an oil tanker in the Persian Gulf.
