Hello, I'm Tom Watts with the BBC News. Malawi's newly elected President Lazarus Chakwera has said his victory is a win for democracy and justice. Speaking after the electoral commission declared he had secured almost 60% of the votes, Mr. Chakwera said his heart was bubbling with joy. Mr. Chakwera's win is being seen as a democratic first in Sub-Saharan Africa. A flawed election result has been overturned and the opposition has gone on to win power. Will Ross has more on the new President. Lazarus Chakwera is about 15 years younger than Mr. Mutharika. So people, we are hoping he'll be bringing a lot more energy to the job. He's got an interesting history in that he swung into politics fairly recently, having been a pentecostal pastor and theology lecturer and he headed the Assemblies of God Church in Malawi and then suddenly decided to veer into politics. And since he's been in opposition in politics, he's been quite a firebrand, you know very critical of the governing party.

Princeton University in the United States says it is to remove former President Woodrow Wilson's name from a building on its campus because of his racist thinking and policies. Mr. Wilson was President between 1913 and 1921, committing US forces to the first world war. But he supported segregation, imposing it on several federal agencies, and spoke approvingly of the Ku Klux Klan.

There were loud cheers at the Lower House of the Mississippi State Congress as it passed a resolution that could remove the confederate emblem from the state flag. The emblem has come to be viewed by many as a racist symbol amid nationwide protests sparked by the recent killing by police in Minneapolis of an unarmed black man. Mississippi is the last state in the country whose flag features the confederate emblem.

The number of coronavirus cases in the United States has reached more than 2.5 million. The world's hardest-hit country has seen a record number of new cases in the south and west. States there are starting to boot back in place restrictions they had been among the first to lift. Our correspondent Peter Bowes has this report. There's a clear link between those states that reopened earlier and more aggressively than other parts of the country and the surge in new cases. Despite warnings of the possible consequences, Florida and Texas forged ahead, allowing businesses including bars to reopen, only to announce a hasty about-turn when cases of COVID-19 hit record highs. The governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, has blamed the spike in infections on more young people meeting up. In the town of Galena Park in Texas, the mayor has imposed an overnight curfew, and it's being warned that hospitals could soon be overwhelmed. Peter Bowes reporting. You're listening to the latest world news from the BBC.
