Have you ever noticed the number of times that a native English speaker uses the word "ever"?

你有没有注意到一个以英语为母语的人用了多少次“ever”这个词?

Ever is an adverb that we Americans say a lot.

Ever是一个我们美国人常说的副词。

Here's today's question, from Zanoni in Venezuela:

今天的问题来自委内瑞拉的Zanoni:

Hello. I would like to get some tips about the right usage of the adverb "ever." Thanks in advance. - Zanoni, Venezuela

你好,我想要一些关于副词“ever”正确用法的建议,提前表示感谢。

Hello, Zanoni!

Zanoni你好!

There are many ways to use the word "ever," but some of them are very formal, less modern, or more common in British English.

“ever”的用法有很多种,但其中一些很正式,不那么现代化,或者在英式英语中更常见。

So it might help more if I tell you how Americans most often use the word.

所以,如果我告诉你美国人最常用的单词是什么,可能会更有帮助。

There are a few ways we use it.

下面是我们用它的几种方式。

The first way means "at any time."

第一种表示“在任何时候”。

For this meaning, we often use it in question form:

对于这个含义,我们经常用在疑问句中:

Have you ever visited Zanzibar?

你去过桑格巴尔岛吗?

Do you ever wonder how you will look in 10 years?

你有没有想过自己10年后会是什么样子?

What is the best film you have ever seen?

你看过最好的电影是什么?

Note that the third example uses the superlative adjective "best."

注意第三个例子使用了形容词的最高级“best”。

We can also use "ever" in statements, such as when you are describing something with a superlative or comparative adjective.

我们还可以在陈述句中使用ever,比如当你用形容词最高级或比较级来描述某事时。

The Ring is the best horror film I've ever seen.

《午夜凶铃》是我看过的最好的恐怖片。

The cost of living is higher than it has ever been.

生活费用比以往任何时候都高。

In negative statements, we can use the term "not ever" to mean "not at any time."

在否定句中,我们可以用“not ever”来表示“任何时候都不要”。

But "never" is much more common.

否定句中“never”更常见。

Listen to the following sentences that have the same meaning:

听下面具有相同含义的句子:

He doesn't ever let his mother finish speaking.

他从不让他妈妈把话说完。

He never lets his mother finish speaking.

他从不让他妈妈把话说完。

But with negative words, like "nobody," "no one," "rarely" and "hardly," we use "ever" instead of "never."

但是对于否定词,比如“nobody”、“no one”、“rarely”和“hardly”,我们会用“ever”而不是“never”。

Let's listen:

请听:

No one here ever cleans up after themselves.

这里没人会自己打扫卫生。

I rarely ever carry money with me.

我很少随身带钱。

Americans also use "ever" in the expression "ever since."

美国人还在表达“ever since”时使用“ever”。

It means "continually or often from a past time until now," which is similar to the meaning of "since."

它的意思是“持续地或经常地从过去的时间直到现在”,与“自从”的意思相似。

But using "ever" adds strength to the statement.

但是使用“ever”可以增强陈述的力量。

Ever since I started stretching, my back has felt much better.

自从我开始做伸展运动,我的背感觉好多了。

You can also say it like this, with the same meaning:

你也可以这样说,意思是一样的:

My back has felt much better ever since I started stretching.

自从我开始做伸展运动后,我的背感觉好多了。

And that's Ask a Teacher.
