A house or a home? That is the question.

用“house”还是“home”这是一个问题。

How do we know when to use one or the other?

我们怎么知道什么时候该用哪个呢?

In today's Ask a Teacher, we answer this question from one of our readers on Facebook.

在今天的《名师答疑》栏目中,我们回答的这个问题来自于Facebook上的读者。

Hello and thanks for asking!

你好,感谢你的提问。

Both "house" and "home" are nouns that refer to living spaces.

“house”和“home”都是指居住空间的名词。

A house is a kind of building that people live in.

“house”是一种人们用来居住的建筑物。

Such buildings are often made for just one family.

通常只供一个家庭使用的建筑物。

But a home is any kind of structure that people live in.

但是“home”是人们居住的任何一种结构。

It can be a house or apartment, a trailer, a boat or something else.

可以是house房子、apartment单元房、公寓、trailer拖车、boat船或者其他的什么东西。

For example, my home is a small apartment in the city.

例如,my home is a small apartment in the city.我们的家是城市里面的一个小单元房。

The word "home" can also refer to a place where something is from or native to.

“home”这个词也可以指某物来自哪里或者本来属于哪里。

Rainforests are home to countless bird species, for example.

例如,热带雨林是无数鸟类的家园。

And, Chicago is the home of deep-dish pizza.

芝加哥是深盘披萨的故乡。

"Home" can even refer to a sense of emotional belonging.

“home”甚至可以指一种情感归属感。

We can say, "Being around family feels like home."

我们可以说:和家人在一起有家的感觉。

Or, if you lived in a place and felt a strong emotional connection to it, you might say, "New York City will always be my home."

或者,如果你住在一个地方,感觉和它有强烈的情感联系,你可能会说,“纽约永远是我的家。”

Unlike "house," we can also use "home" as an adverb.

我们可以把“home”用作一个副词,而“home”不可以。

We mostly pair it with verbs of motion – for example, walk home, get home, go home, drive home, fly home, run home and come home.

我们通常把它和动作动词搭配在一起——例如,walk home走路回家,get home回家,go home回家,drive home开车回家,fly home飞回家,run home跑回家,come home回家。

But a few are unrelated to motion, such as stay home, call home and be home.

但也有一些与动作无关,比如呆在家里、打电话回家、在家。

When "home" is an adverb, we almost never put words between the verb and "home."

当“home”做副词时,动作动词和“home”之间通常不放任何单词。

I can say, for example, "I'm flying home from Toronto Wednesday"

比如,我们可以说:“I'm flying home from Toronto Wednesday.周三我要从多伦多飞回家。”

or "We stayed home last night. It was so cold out."

或者“We stayed home last night. It was so cold out.昨晚太冷了,我们一直待在家里。”

These differences seem easy enough, right?

这些区别看起来很简单对吧?

The uncertainty between the two words probably comes when we use "house" informally.

这两个词之间的混淆可能来自于我们非正式地使用“house”。

For instance, I can say, "I'm at a friend's house" or "I'm not leaving the house tonight."

比如,我可以说“I'm at a friend's house我在朋友家”或者“I'm not leaving the house tonight.我今晚不出门。”

But, we usually only use the word this way when we're talking about being at a house, or leaving or staying in a house.

但是,我们通常只谈论待在房子里,或离开房子里时才这样用这个词。

In these statements, you can use "house" or "home": "I stayed home last night" and "I stayed in the house last night." The meaning is the same.

在下面的描述中,用“house”或“home”都行,意思是一样的:I stayed home last night或者I stayed in the house last night.我昨晚待在家。

In other words, "home" is a little more flexible than "house."

换句话说,“home”比“house”用起来更灵活一些。

You can stay home or stay in the house;

呆在家里你可以说“stay home”或者“stay in the house”;

you can also go home or come home;

回家你也可以说“go home”或“come home”;

but you cannot go house or come house.

但你不能说“ go house”或“come house”。
