Welcome back to Ask a Teacher!

欢迎收听名师答疑!

Many English prepositions can be close in meaning.

英语中很多介词意思相近。

So, sometimes knowing which to choose is hard.

所以,有时候就不知道选哪个比较好。

But, today's program can help. Here is the question:

不过,今天的节目可以帮到大家。下面是本期的问题:

I would like to know when I should use in, into, on or onto. Thanks. -MOD

我想知道什么时候该用in、into、on或者onto。谢谢您。

That is a wonderful question!

这个问题很好!

Today, I will explore just two of those words.

今天,我会来剖析一下其中的2个单词。

In a future program, I can talk about the other two.

在后面的节目中,我们继续探讨另外2个单词。

It is easy to confuse the word on with onto since, at times, they can replace each other.

很容易混淆on和onto这两个单词,因为有时候它们可以通用。

The main difference is that onto is about movement from one place to another. The word on is not.

主要的区别在于:onto是从一个地方移到另一个地方。但on就不具备这样的含义。

If you ever have trouble choosing, look at the verb.

如果大家遇到选择困难,可以看一下动词。

Does it suggest movement? If it does, onto is usually the best choice.

动词是否有移动的含义?如果是的话,那么onto一般是最好的选择。

Verbs like drive, climb, step, walk, run and many others suggest movement.

drive、climb、step、walk、run等动词有表示移动的含义。

Listen to an example:

下面听一个例子:

The dog climbed onto the sofa.

这只狗爬到了沙发上去。

This means that the dog was not on the sofa at first. He climbed there.

这句话的意思是:这只狗起初没有在沙发上,是后来爬上去的。

Now, listen to the difference:

现在,请大家听一下区别:

The dog climbed on the sofa.

这只狗爬到了沙发上。

This suggests that the dog was already on the sofa.

这表明,这只狗现在已经在沙发上了。

Maybe he was moving around on it.

或许它还在沙发上走来走去。

That is probably not what the speaker wanted to say.

但这并不是说话人想表达的内容。

Here is another example:

再听一个例子:

I walked onto the bridge and took a photo.

我走到桥上,拍了张照片。

This means the person was not on the bridge at first. They walked there from some other place.

这句话的意思是:这个人起初没在桥上,是从其他地方走过去的。

Now, listen to the difference:

现在,请大家听一下区别:

I walked on the bridge and took a photo.

我在桥上走着,拍了张照片。

This suggests the person was already on the bridge. They walked around while on it.

这句话表明,这个人已经在桥上了,而且在桥上的时候到处走动了。

Next, listen to an example where on is the correct choice.

下面,听一个用on最佳的例子。

The book is on the table.

这本书在书桌上。

The verb be does not suggest movement.

be动词并不能表达移动的含义。

The book is already there. Therefore, you cannot say, "The book is onto the table."

这本书已经在那里了。因此,大家不能说“The book is onto the table。”

With a few verbs, such as put, you can use either word.

如果有put等动词的出现,那么on和onto就可以通用,

Here is an example: He put the book onto the table.

比如:他将书放在了桌子上。

It has the same meaning as this: He put the book on the table.

这句话和下面这句话同义:他将书放在了桌子上。

Onto is technically right. But on usually sounds more natural with put in speech.

用onto没有错,只是on听起来更自然一些,毕竟句子里有put这个单词。

And that's Ask a Teacher.
