Welcome back, everyone!

欢迎回来,各位!

Last week, I answered a question from a reader about the prepositions on and onto.

上周,我回答了一位读者关于介词on和onto的问题。

The other part of the question was about two more prepositions: in and into.

问题的另一部分是关于另外两个介词in和into。

So, today I will talk about them.

所以,今天我要谈谈这两个介词。

Then, I will offer a tip on when to use all four words.

然后,关于何时使用这四个单词,我将给大家一些建议。

First, here is the question again, from last week:

首先,还是上周的问题:

I would like to know when I should use in, into, on or onto. Thanks.

我想知道什么时候用in、into、on或onto。谢谢。

Thank you again for the question!

再次感谢你的问题!

As you may know, a preposition is a word that is used to show direction, position or time.

你可能知道,介词是一个用来表示方向、位置或时间的词。

Like many English prepositions, in and into have more than one meaning.

像许多英语介词一样,in和into有不止一个意思。

But to compare their uses, we need to focus on two things: position and direction.

但是为了比较它们的用途,我们需要关注两件事:位置和方向。

The first thing to know is that in is about position and into is about direction.

首先要知道in是表示关于位置的,into是关于方向的。

We use the word in to show the position of something within or inside a larger place or area.

我们用in来表示某物在一个更大的地方或区域内的位置。

In suggests the person or thing is at rest.

in表示人或物处于静止状态。

So, we use verbs that suggest being at rest.

所以,我们使用含有静止状态含义的动词。

Listen to a few examples:

听听这些例子:

I am sitting in a coffee house writing a story.

我坐在咖啡馆里写故事。

The iguana is hiding in the tree.

鬣蜥藏在树上。

Oh no! I left my metro card in the house.

噢,不!我把地铁卡忘在家里了。

The word into suggests movement toward something.

into这个词表示向某物移动。

We use it when a person or thing moves from an area outside to the inside.

当表达一个人或一个东西从外面的一个区域移动到里面的时候,我们用这个词语。

Here are a few examples:

来看一些例子:

I walked into the coffee house and ordered a latte.

我走进咖啡馆,点了一杯拿铁。

The iguana jumped into the water and swam away.

鬣蜥跳进水里游走了。

Oh no! My phone just fell into the sink.

噢,不!我的手机掉进水槽里了。

You will probably hear English speakers using the word in when they really mean into.

你可能会听到说英语的人有时候使用in这个词,其实按他们真正要表达的意思应该使用into。

For example, someone might say:

例如,有人可能会说:

Oh no! My phone just fell in the sink.

噢,不!我的手机掉进水槽里了。

Into is more correct. But, in speech, in is a lot more common with some motion-related verbs, such as fall and put.

使用into更准确。但是,在口语中,in与一些与动作相关的动词(如fall和put)一起使用更为常见。

And now for the tip:

现在,给大家一些小建议:

Use the words on and in for position or location.

用on和in表示位置或地点。

The person or thing is usually at rest, so the verb usually does not suggest movement.

人或物通常处于静止状态,所以所使用的动词通常不表示运动状态。

Use onto and into for direction. The person or thing is moving toward something.

用onto和into表示方向。人或物正在向某物移动。

So, the verbs will suggest movement.

所以,所使用的动词表示动作,运动状态。

And that's Ask a Teacher.

以上是本期名师答疑的全部内容。

I'm Alice Bryant.
