Today we answer a question from Morgan in China. Morgan writes:

今天我们要回答来中国的摩根提出的一个问题。摩根写道:

I have a question about the words "glad" and "happy."

我对“glad”和“happy”这两个词有疑问。

In which situations would I use them? I am confused by these words.

“我在什么情况下使用它们?”我被这两个词弄糊涂了。

Thanks so much. -- Morgan, China.

非常感谢。

Dear Morgan, Thank you for writing!

亲爱的摩根, 感谢你的来信!

First, let us take a look at the two words and see how they are the same and how they are different.

首先,让我们来看看这两个词,看看它们有什么相同之处,又有什么不同之处。

"Glad" and "happy" both share the meaning of the feeling of pleasure, joy or delight.

“Glad”和“happy”都有愉悦、快乐或高兴的含义。

Sometimes the two words can be used the same way.

有时这两个词可以以相同的方式使用。

In sentences with the words "be," "look" or "feel," "glad" and "happy" are very similar, so either one can be used.

在带有“be”、“look”或“feel”的句子中,“glad”和“happy”非常相似,所以用哪个都可以。

Here are two examples:

这里有两个例子:

He feels glad about how things turned out.

他对事情的结果感到高兴。

She looks happy with her coat.

她很满意她的外套。

You can also use "glad" or "happy" when you want to say that someone is willing to do something.

当你想说某人愿意做某事时,你也可以用“glad”或“happy”。

For example: I would be glad to join you.

例如:我很乐意加入你们。

I would be happy to help you.

我很乐意帮助你。

One way in which you would use "happy" and not "glad" is when you are describing a feeling of pleasure and enjoyment because of your life or situation.

使用“happy”,不使用“glad”的一种方式是,当你形容由于自己的生活或处境而感到愉快和享受时。

For example: She was a very happy child.

例如:她是一个非常快乐的孩子。

Happy is better in this sentence for this reason: the child was happy because of conditions in her situation.

在这句话中用“happy”更好是出于这个原因:孩子因为自己的处境条件而感到快乐。

It was more than just one event.

它不仅仅是针对一件事。

If you were to say that the child was glad, it would be a temporary feeling. For example:

如果你用“glad”来形容孩子很高兴,那快乐只是暂时的。例如:

She was very glad when her father came home.

当她父亲回家时,她非常高兴。

Another time when you would use "happy" instead of "glad" is when it is used as an adjective -- changing the meaning of the following noun.

使用“happy”而不是“glad”的另一种情况是当它用作形容词时——改变下面名词的意思。

Here are a few examples: I could hear the child's happy laughter from the other room.

以下是一些例子:我能听到另一个房间里孩子们愉快的笑声。

They have had a very happy marriage.

他们的婚姻很美满。

Those were happy times.

那是一段快乐的时光。

Another way in which "happy" is used is when it is used as part of a greeting or wish for someone on a holiday or special occasion.

“happy”的另一种用法是当它在节日或特殊场合被用作问候或祝福的一部分时。

You would always use "happy," not "glad," for a greeting like this:

你会常常使用“happy”,而不是“glad”来表示像这样的问候:

We are wishing you happy holidays!

我们祝你节日快乐呀!

I hope that helps to answer your question, Morgan.

我希望以上能帮助解答你的问题,摩根。
