Hello! This week on Ask a Teacher we answer a question from Tien in Vietnam.

大家好!本周的《名师答疑》,我们回答来自越南的田的一个问题。

Dear VOA, I am writing to ask a question about the difference between "drop in " and "drop by." Thanks in advance.

亲爱的美国之音,我写信是想问drop in和drop by之间有什么区别。提前谢谢你。

Dear Tien, thank you for writing to us.

亲爱的田,谢谢你的来信。

Both of these expressions mean to pay someone or something an informal visit.

这两个短语的意思都是非正式地拜访某人或参观某物。

You may say, you "dropped by" someone's house if you did not have an invitation but decided to visit them because you were in the neighborhood.

如果你没有收到邀请,但因为刚好在某人住所附近,所以决定去拜访他们,你就可以说你顺道拜访了他们。

But there is a small difference between the expressions that may help you know when to use them.

但两个短语有一点细微差异,可以帮助你弄懂什么时候使用哪一个。

Let us begin with "drop by."

我们先讲drop by。

It is a two-part phrasal verb, which means it combines a verb and an adverb.

这是一个由两部分组成的短语动词,表示它由动词和副词组合而成。

The verb is "drop," which usually describes something falling in small amounts.

动词是drop,通常用来描述一些少量的东西落下。

The adverb is "by" which means "near."

副词是by,意思是“近”。

Here is an example of how to use it: I asked James to drop by the café tonight to hear our music.

这里有一个如何使用它的例句:我让詹姆斯今晚顺道去咖啡馆听我们的音乐。

In this example, when you go to a café, you do not need an invitation.

在这个例句中,当你去咖啡馆时,你不需要邀请。

You can enter for a short time or even stay outside of the building and still say you "dropped by."

你可以进去一小段时间,甚至只是呆在大楼外,但仍然可以用dropped by。

I found that people are using "drop by" to talk about the places they visit on a computer, as well as in person.

我发现,人们不仅用drop by来谈论亲自到过的地方,也用来表示在电脑上访问过的地方。

Here are some examples: Please drop by my other blog on photography.

这里有一些例句:请访问我另一个关于摄影的博客。

Drop by every Monday for a new Mainly about Boats column.

欢迎每周一阅读《舟船纪事》新专栏。

Next, we can look at "drop in."

接着,我们可以讲讲drop in。

This expression can be a two- or three-word phrasal verb.

这个短语可以是两个或三个单词构成的短语动词。

The two-word form, "drop in," can be used like "drop by" with one difference – if you go to a place and plan to enter it, you would say:

两个词的drop in和drop by用法相同,但有一点不同——如果你去一个地方,打算走进去,你会说:

I was passing your street and I thought I'd drop in--do you have time for tea?

我路过你那边的那条街,想顺便过来一下——你有空喝个茶吗?

If you did not plan to enter the house or building, you could use "drop by," as in:

如果你不打算进入这所房子或大楼,你可以用drop by,例如:

I will drop by tomorrow and put the letter under your door.

我明天会顺便来一趟,把信放在你家门下面。

The three-word phrasal verb form is "drop in on."

三个单词的形式是drop in on。

You might hear it used this way: Every now and then he would drop in on Grandmother for a quick chat.

你可能会听到它是这样用的:他会时不时地顺便看看奶奶,简单聊两句。

You can tell from this final example that we use "drop in on" when we are talking about entering someone's home:

从最后一个例句可以看出,当我们谈论进入某人的家时,我们用drop in on:

The middle of the night is a bad time to drop in on a friend, but we could see that Megan needed help.

半夜去朋友家里不太好,但我们可以看出梅根需要帮助。

I hope this helps you understand when to use these expressions, Tien.

田,希望这能帮助你理解什么时候该使用这些表达。

Maybe you can practice them next time you drop by an English class!

也许你下次去上英语课的时候可以练习一下!

And that's Ask a Teacher. I'm Jill Robbins.
