The Communist Party of Nepal's Maoists has become the largest party in the Himalayan country after recent elections.

The Nepali Election Commission has announced the final results of the Constituent Assembly election, the first national one since 1999. It said the Maoists took 220 seats in the 601-member assembly.

The Nepali Congress Party won 110 seats, while the Communist Party Marxists and Leninists faction garnered 103 seats.

The results do not give the Maoists a clear majority but makes it the largest party in the assembly.

Bhojraj Pokhrel, the Chief election commissioner said that names of the assembly members have not been determined.

"We have asked the political parties as per the regulations to submit names of their members who would be appointed to the assembly. Because of this we will have to wait a few more days to get the final list of members' names."

The commission said the parties have a week to submit names of members who will fill the seats won through proportional representation.

The Constituent Assembly, to be formed after elections started on April 10, is to decide the future political setup and the fate of the monarchy of Nepal.
