(London is Bidding for Olympics)

ANCHOR
Thousands of new jobs and a whole different look around the cards for one of London’s most rundown neighborhoods. British are preparing a bid for the 2012 games to be held in the impoverished area of Hackney. Jim Bolden reports significant investments will be needed to realize Britain’s Olympic dreams.

JIM BOULDEN
A victory on this day, but London’s mayor knows the race has just begun. The British government has said it will financially back a bid by London to go for the 2012 Olympics. Now comes two years of intensive lobbying to convince the International Olympic Committee.

KEN LIVINGSTONE, LONDON MAYOR
The three key cities there stand here ahead of the others and that’s Paris, and London and Madrid. I do think that we got a one in three chance of winning this. And if we can do that, we’re talking about thousands of billions of pounds of actual investment in London over the decade to come.

JIM BOULDEN
Other cities including Toronto and Moscow may bid to join London and the bookies’ favorite, New York City.

JIM BOULDEN
Paris, Madrid, New York and London. Or more accurately, East London. The mayor’s plan is to build the Olympic venues in one of the poorest parts of Western Europe. His idea, to take this derelict dog track and make an Olympic stadium.

JIM BOULDEN
The mayor revealed that his team has been quietly buying up land in and around Stratford, East London, an area that has missed out on regeneration. Spending several billion dollars on infrastructure and housing would certainly transform the area. That’s what worries some residents.

ANNE WOOLLETT, HACKNEY ENVIRONMENTAL FORUM
We’re afraid that this area’s just gonna get concreted over. And that while the games would be fun, it will only be for a few days. We’ll all be left with all the tacky kind of concrete and whatever that’s left behind.

JIM BOULDEN
What also worries critics is the deficit left behind. Some Olympic cities have suffered financially from the games. But British athletes say it’s money well spent.

TESSA SANDERSON OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST
The Olympic Games, I feel, having done six games, brings a lot of business to certain areas. So there’s a lot of things that the legacy could be that after the games have gone, you still have some great sporting facilities that people can use.

JIM BOULDEN
And well cities have found it hard to use all the facilities left after the games, Barcelona for one is still benefiting from a successful Olympics eleven years ago.

MELVIN GOLD, HOSPITALITY CONSULTANT
The city has now got 3 or 4 new convention centers and has really taken the opportunity to put itself on the map. And with the advent of Budget Airlines as well, Barcelona is now an essential destination whereas previously it was a backwater in Spain.

JIM BOULDEN
Taxes will go up if London gets the games. The city also has a creaky transport system. And many of its civil projects come in over budget and after the deadline. But the mayor insists his team will get a gold medal for this Olympic effort. Jim Bolden, CNN London.
