(Heat Wave Strikes Europe)

ANCHOR
Well, Italy is feeling some of its hottest weather for 50 years. You might think that’s good news for the tourism industry, but visitor numbers to major cities around Europe are actually wilting. Paula Hancocks is in Rome with a look at the winners and losers in Italy’s heat wave.

And if it’s your job to entertain the tourists...

STREET ENTERTAINER
It’s extremely hot in Italy this year. It’s really hot. It feels like you are in Mexico.

CORRESPONDENT
And if it’s your job to make the tourists look good...

ITALIAN STREET PHOTOGRAPHER
They’re in a mess, very sweaty. I work well in the winter when they’re all dressed up and elegant. Now that they’re just unclean, not so interesting.

CORRESPONDENT
But some Italian favorites are adapting to attract the heat beaten tourists, creating cold pizzas and ditching the winter dishes like lasagna. So why not cool down with a gelato? With 70 million more ice-creams than usual being sold in the past two months, you wouldn’t be alone. And if you think that tourists are suffering, spare a thought for the poor animals.

Even animals that are used to this kind of heat do need to be taken care of. Rome’s zoo has been giving some of its residents some special cooling treats since May. For example, some fruit, fish frozen in ice cubes, or maybe a melon delicacy, snacks lovingly prepared.
KLAUS G. FRIEDRICH, ROME ZOO VETERINARIAN
It’s difficult to know if they like something because they, they can’t say it to you. But you can see their behavior, you know. You can see that they go under the water, they, they steal from one another, each other, the ice-creams, so this is interesting, they, they like...like to play with these things, and they try for hours and hours to get out the food...the pieces of food from these ice blocks.

CORRESPONDENT
Frozen fruit hidden in bamboo for that extra challenge. But if frozen food isn’t working, how about a cold shower? Paula Hancocks, CNN, Rome.
