Bush Visit to London Prompts Demonstrations

ANCHOR
As President Bush's visit continues, organizers are bracing for a huge demonstration in London's Trafalgar Square this Thursday. Protesters denouncing the war in Iraq say they plan to be out in force. Now as Christiane Amanpour now reports, despite tight security, the protests have already begun.

CORRESPONDENT
It was billed as the alternative state procession. Since the U.S. Secret Service decided that President Bush should forgo the traditional carriage ride with the Queen, demonstrators dressed up as look-alikes and took their own horse-drawn buggy through the streets of London. It was all designed to be light-hearted: Kids peaked out of the front of a pink tank fashioned out of wood.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE
Please stay out of the security bubble. We'll have to deploy our nuclear weapons.

CORRESPONDENT
Jokes aside, this visit comes with unprecedented security. Fourteen thousand police deployed in central London throughout the 3-day state visit, concrete barriers, metal detectors and rooftop marksmen. Still, a journalist from a British tabloid managed to infiltrate Buckingham Palace and pose as a footman. The Queen has demanded a full investigation.

London is ranked high on Al Qaeda's list of targets since September 11, though Scotland Yard says it's received no specific threat against President Bush. But the President is unpopular amongst many Britons, an object of scorn and caricature, a target for those uncomfortable with what's perceived as unilateral foreign policy, one that has war as its central platform.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE
I want to stand up and be counted because I so deeply disapprove of what we have done to Iraq.

CORRESPONDENT
But polls show the British are overwhelmingly pro-American and treasure the alliance. We're not anti-American, they say, we're anti-Bush.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE
Bush has squandered. You know, after September the 11th, he had the world's sympathy, anything, and it's just been squandered, squandered.

CORRESPONDENT
Many complain the Bush administration has snubbed international treaties, such as pulling out of the Kyoto Climate Accord. Even Prime Minister Blair's wife, a prominent lawyer, this week criticized Bush for pulling the U.S. out of the International Criminal Court. The protestors are being kept well away from President Bush and he's unlikely to see any of them.
